WARSAW —
Middlebury junior all-star baseball coach Jim Burgess wanted his team to get off to a fast start Thursday night in the District 14 Little League championship game.
He got it as lead-off batter Chase Anderson belted the second pitch he saw over the left field fence that is 300 hundred feet from home plate as Middlebury went on to post a 16-4 five-inning victory over Goshen.
“Chase’s home run was huge. It set the tone for us,” Burgess said. “One thing we have been talking to the kids about is getting on top and letting the other team know we are here.”
“The ball was in my zone and I knew it was one I could hit,” Anderson said. “The home run got us off to a pretty good start.”
Middlebury had some incentive to win the game as it was dedicated to long-time Middlebury Little League volunteer Marion Miller.
“Marion is dying of cancer so we wanted to win for him,” Burgess said. “He has given so much to the program that I choked up talking to the kids about him. He means a lot to the Middlebury community. God bless him.”
Middlebury scored three runs in the opening inning as Andy Ross chipped in with a run-scoring double and Austin Beckler drove in a run with a ground out to short.
The runs kept coming in the second as Eric Burgess drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, Matt Miller and Dylan Sandy singled home runs, Anderson knocked in one with a triple and Ross another with a double.
“Offense has not been a problem for this team,” Burgess said. “This gives us an even 100 runs in the tournament.”
Goshen had chances to score as three Middlebury pitchers combined on eight base on balls.
“We had opportunities we just didn’t capitalize on them” Goshen manage Daniel Lichty said. “Offense had not been a problem for us. Coming into this game we had scored 75 runs in five games. I figured this would be an offensive battle.
“I don’t want to take anything away from Middlebury’s win, but we gave away too much. We had too many errors. I am proud of the kids. They stayed with the game plan in a very tough emotional game.
Middlebury ended the game with a seven-run outburst in the fifth inning with the final blow being a bases clearing triple by Derrike Johns.
The Middlebury players have gotten some advice on how to handle tournament pressures for former Middlebury all-Stars that advanced to the World Series in 2009.
“Those kids have come back and worked with the current players,” Burgess said. “It’s nice to have players with that kind of experience talking to your players. The 2009 team started their road to the World Series on this very field.”
The Middlebury pitchers limited Goshen hitters to four base hits. Daniel Behan-Morillo doubled home a run in the fifth and Conner Glick singled home on in the third to lead the Goshen offense.
“We talked to our pitchers about throwing first-pitch strikes,” Burgess said. “But our two lefties got a little frustrated with the strike zone.”
