COLLEGE CONNECTIONS: Ex-Raider Troyer tops 1,000 points

GOSHEN — Senior Derrick Troyer has broken the 1,000-point barrier in his basketball career for the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats.

The Northridge High School graduate netted his 1,000th point on Saturday during a 90-85 triple overtime (55 minutes) win over Mount Vernon Nazarene.

Troyer finished the game with eight points, three rebounds, three assists and six steals.

His two free throws following a hard foul after he snared an offensive rebounds gave the Wildcats an 80-78 lead with :40 left in the second overtime, but Mount Vernon tied the scored on two freebies with 0.9 seconds to force the third extra session.

Troyer has started all 24 games this season for the 15-9 (7-5 Mid-Central Conference) Wildcats. He is averaging 27.7 minutes per game and is the fourth-leading scorer with 223 points. Troyer is shooting 73.7 percent (65-of-87) from the free-throw line. He leads the team with 80 assists and 53 steals.

Men’s Basketball

Senior Justin Yoder (Westview) netted 17 points for the Cornerstone Golden Eagles in an 81-57 victory over Aquinas. Yoder drilled 6-of-9 field goals (4-of-9 from 3-point range) and was 1-of-1 from the free-throw line to go with a rebound, two assists and a steal. Cornerstone went on an early 17-1 run to take control of the contest. The Golden Eagles swished five straight 3-pointers (one by Yoder) during the stretch.

Bethel sophomore Taylor Kolbus (Goshen) had six points and six rebounds for the Pilots in a 70-61 Mid-Central Conference loss to the Taylor Trojans at Bethel in Mishawaka. Sophomore Josh Riikonen (Elkhart Central) scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds for the Trojans.

Junior Ethan Hussey (Goshen) tossed in a game-high 20 points for the Saint Francis Cougars in a 69-66 MCC win over the Goshen College Maple Leafs. Hussey hit 7-of-14 field goals (2-of-5 from 3-point range) and 4-of-5 free throws. He also had six rebounds, two steals and an assist. It was the third straight win for the Cougars over an NAIA Top 25 opponent and ties Saint Francis for second place in the MCC.

Freshman Judson Yoder (Clinton Christian) totaled four points, two rebounds and a steal for the Grace Lancers in a JV win over Saint Francis.

Women’s Basketball

Junior Ashlee Ort (Wawasee) netted a career-high 18 points for the Bethel Pilots in a 75-58 Mid-Central Conference win at Taylor. Ort was 7-of-10 shooting (2-for-4 from 3-point range) and 2-of-4 from the free-throw line. She also had eight rebounds, two assists and three steals.

“Ashlee played the best game of her career,” Bethel coach Jody Martinez said in an interview on the school’s Web site.

Junior Courtney Simpson (NorthWood) had seven points, 10 rebounds and two assists for the IU-South Bend Titans in a 63-44 loss to St. Xavier in South Bend. Junior Leah Meyer (Northridge) chipped in with two points, four rebounds and three steals for the Titans.

Freshman Marla zumFelde (Bethany Christian) came off the bench to score eight points as the Eastern Mennonite Royals defeated the Randolph Wildcats 79-48.

Men’s Indoor Track

Purdue freshman Tyler Wynn (Goshen) won the 800 meters (1:54.99) and sophomore Mitch Keyser (Northridge) finished third (1:55.51) in the Gene Edmonds Cup at Lambert Fieldhouse on the Purdue campus. Earlier this season at the Purdue Invitational, Keyser won the 600 meters (1:21.84) and Wynn placed second in the 800 (1:58.66).

Women’s Swimming

Ball State sophomore Emily Wisolek (Northridge) teamed with senior Nicole Saulters (Highland), junior Jillian Bischoff (Hamilton Heights) and freshman Carlena Magley (DeKalb) to win the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:32.80) as the Cardinals dropped a 189-106 Mid-American Conference decision to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Wisolek also finished fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:07.67). Sophomore Mia Miller (Goshen) placed fourth in the 50 free (24.94) and seventh in the 200 free (1:48.07) and freshman Kayla Hussey (Goshen) fourth in the 1,000 free (10:41.53), seventh in the 500 free (5:18.60) and eighth in the 200 butterfly (2:16.27).

Franklin freshman Brenna Ghigliotto (NorthWood) teamed with classmates Emily Metheny (La Porte), Tricia Foster (Chrysler) and Sarah White (Franklin Community) to win the 200 medley relay in a school record time of 2:05.57 at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Invitational at the Franklin Community High School pool. In individual events, Ghigliotto was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.62), second in the 200 breast (2:37.47) and third in the 500 freestyle (5:46.22).

Men’s Swimming

Rose-Hulman sophomore Andrew Podgorski (Goshen) teamed with juniors John Huster, Matt Ross and Ross Menininger for a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:40.97) as the HCAC Invitational. Podgorski won the 100 breastroke (1:02.47) and was second in the 200 breast (2:17.36) for the Fightin’ Engineers. Also for Rose-Hulman, freshman Stephen Housman (Concord) finished fifth in the 200 butterfly (2:15.57) and seventh in the 100 fly (1:00.45) and freshman Marshall Yeoman (Elkhart Memorial) placed fourth in the 100 breast (1:03.85) and eighth in the 200 individual medley (2:21.35).
