GOSHEN —
After a blowout loss to Penn last Saturday night in the NIC-NLC Challenge, the Goshen boys basketball team was looking to get back on track Friday night when NLC foe Concord came calling to resume conference competition.
Unfortunately for the Redskins, that was not to be, as the Minutemen pulled away late for a 54-30 win over Goshen to move to 8-0 on the season (2-0 NLC).
Concord coach Steve Austin said his team’s stepped-up defense from the second quarter on made the difference.
That, and his team hitting some shots.
“We took better care of the ball and had some guys step up and hit some shots,” Austin said.
The Minutemen had 10 turnovers in the first half and just three in the second.
Early on , this one had all the trappings of a garden-variety Friday night NLC slugfest. Goshen opened with a 5-2 run and grinded its way to a 10-7 advantage at the first stop.
Concord took its first lead of the night at the 3:39 mark of the second stanza – a slim 14-14 advantage — on a Filip Serwatka 3-pointer.
Serwatka also scored the last six points of the quarter for the Minutemen as Concord led 20-17 at intermission.
The Minutemen opened the second half with a quick 7-0 run to surge out to a double-digit lead at 27-17.
Concord found its shooting touch late in the third, getting back-to-back trifectas from Ramon Johnson and Serwatka to push out to a 35-23 lead at the final stop.
The Minutemen pulled away in the fourth, opening the final frame with a 9-2 run to surge out to a 44-25 advantage with 4:40 remaining.
Goshen coach Brian Bechtel was disappointed in his team’s communication. “When you have to yell four times to get a play in, that’s not good,” Bechtel said. “We have some toughness issues, and we aren’t doing the little things.”
Serwatka had 19 points to lead the Minutemen. Ramon Johnson had 10.
Jesse Good led the Redskins with 10 points.
Concord was a 43-36 winner in the J.V. contest. Trevor Willmore, Ryan Tepe and Brett Austin led the J.V. Minutemen with eight points apiece. D.J. Ambrose led the J.V. Redskins with 11 points.
The Redskins return to action next Friday night with another home NLC contest at home against Warsaw. Tipoff is slated for 7:45 p.m. Concord travels to South Bend Clay for a nonconference contest on Tuesday.
