The NAIA Division II No. 1 ranked Indiana Wesleyan women’s basketball team survived an upset scare in a 69-59 overtime win at Marian University in Indianapolis.
Junior Taylor Goshert (Wawasee) had 14 points and nine rebounds and sophomore Emma Stahl (Jimtown) 10 points and four assists for the winners.
Goshert’s basket following an offensive rebound :33 into overtime that gave the Wildcats the lead for good. Indiana Wesleyan controlled the extra session scoring the first eight points.
It was the first overtime game of the season for the Wildcats (21-1 overall, 9-1 Crossroads League).
The Wildcats won their first 20 games of the season before suffering a 62-55 loss at Saint Francis in Fort Wayne.
Senior Courtney Simpson (NorthWood) made 3-of-4 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws for a total 10 points for the IUSB Titans in a 60-59 home loss to Roosevelt. Simpson also had eight rebounds, two assists and a steal. Junior Lauren Adams (Northridge) chipped in with eight points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal; senior Leah Meyer (Northridge) and freshman Sydney Sample (Northridge) both two rebounds.
The Bethel Pilots improved to 18-4 (8-2 Crossroads League) with a 69-59 win at Mishawaka. Senior Ashlee Ort (Wawasee) tallied eight points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals for the winners.
Ferris State junior Sarah DeShone (Jimtown) netted six points to go with five assists and three steals as the Bulldogs defeated Lake Superior State 74-71 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game in Sault Ste, Marie, Michigan.
Women’s Indoor Track
Indiana Tech junior Chloe Brooks (Concord) placed sixth in the 60-meter dash (7.78) and fifth in the 200 (25.40) and freshman Jeslyn Zimmerly (Westview) fifth in pole vault (3.50 meters) in the Tiffin University Carnival.
Indiana State senior Hanna Mercer (Northridge) placed eighth in the mile run (5:28.26) at the Illinois State Dual and 10th in the mile (4:16.80) in the Gene Edmonds Cup in Lambert Fieldhouse at Purdue.
Eastern Mennonite freshman Juni Schirch (Goshen) teamed with freshman Hannah Chappell-Dick, senior Sophie Holmes and freshman Chafin Brumfield for a third-place finish in the 4 x 400-meter relay (4:23.78) at the Orange & Maroon Classic hosted by Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. Their time is the second-best in school history.
Grand Valley State sophomore Hannah Deak (Northridge) finished third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:.01.43), third in the 200 fly (2:16.26) and fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:18.72) in a 177-123 win over Indianapolis.
Sophomore Sarah Griffin (Northridge) was second in the 100 back (1:02.10) and 200 back (2:14.68) for Indianapolis.
Sophomore Breanna Ghigliotto (NorthWood) placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.87) and second in the 200 breast (2:35.38) for the Franklin Grizzlies in the Colonel Classic at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Ghigliotto teamed with freshmen Shelby Conrad, Cara Hayes and Hope Steel to place fourth in the 400 medley relay in a school record time of 4:19.12.
Freshman Audra Burtch (Concord) finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:20.74) and fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:11.86) for the Eastern Michigan Eagles in a 158-142 Mid-American Conference win at Ball State.
Junior Emily Wisolek (Northridge) teamed with junior Haley Richter, senior Jillian Bischoff and sophomore Carlena Magley for a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:28.26) for the hosts.
Wisolek placed second in the 100 free (52.92), 5th in the 100 butterfly (57.80) and 5th in the 200 fly (2:07.82) and sophomore Kayla Hussey (Goshen) sixth in the 500 free (5:30.69).
Sophomore Nathaniel Stoller (Northridge) won the 100-yard butterfly (50.46) and was second in the 200 fly (1:59.81) for Grand Valley State in a 188-112 win over Indianapolis.
Sophomore Dalton Herendeen (Concord) finished fifth in the 400 individual medley (4;31.10) for Indianapolis.
