GOSHEN —
The “on” switch was idle too long Tuesday night for the Goshen High School boys basketball team.
The Redskins were outscored 12-0 in the first 5:57 of the third quarter and that was decisive in a 49-45 non-conference loss to the Mishawaka Cavemen at GHS.
Goshen, as it has done all winter, refused to fold. The Redskins trailed 43-27 with 5:20 to play and rallied to within two points before Mishawaka iced it at the free-throw line.
“I am proud of that comeback, but we need to play with more mojo earlier in the game,” said Redskin head coach Brian Bechtel. “This team needs to play determined with no fear from the start.”
The Redskins, dropping to 6-8, are back on the home floor Friday night with a Northern Lakes Conference outing against the Plymouth Pilgrims.
Junior Sam Stegelmann scored 16 points and classmate Austin Henke 13 for the Skins against the talented Cavemen who were well aware of Goshen’s top shooters.
“We got good looks, but just didn’t hit shots when we needed to,” said Bechtel. “I actually thought we ran our offense better, defended well enough to win, held down our turnovers and played with poise.”
Goshen’s only leads of the night were at 2-0 and 4-3. The Cavemen led 15-12 at the first stop and 24-22 at halftime. Mishawaka scored the first 12 points of the third stanza to lead 36-22.
Down by 16 and going just 10-for-34 from the field, the Redskins suddenly ignited and gave the home fans the brief dream of a stunning comeback.
Senior Louis Kissinger scored on a rebound and Henke hit two free throws to get it started. Senior Josh Gill hit a baseline jumper, then Stegelmann nailed a pair of 3-pointers, Henke and junior Jesse Good one apiece.
Suddenly, Goshen was down just 47-45 after the Good ‘3’ with 0:35 to play.
But, the poised Cavemen got the ball to junior Chris Mitchell who was fouled and made two free throws to close the scoring. A couple late Goshen shots were off target.
Brandon Vanderheggen, a 6-1 senior, scored 23 points for Mishawaka which seems to have a habit of hot shooting in the 51-year-old Goshen gymnasium.
“January is traditionally our toughest month, especially with Concord, Warsaw and Memorial on the road,” said Bechtel. “We have some good matchups coming up in February and need to get serious and play our best basketball.”
Kissinger had seven rebounds to lead Goshen in that category with Mishawaka winning the board battle, 27-21.
The Redskin junior varsity improved to 9-5 with a 44-36 triumph over the young Cavemen.
Alex Hartsough scored 13 points for GHS, Deric Haynes 12, Isaac Huerta seven, Chase Goodman six, Hunter Warrick and Jack Gingerich both two, D.J. Ambrose and Alex Haney both one.
