CULVER — NorthWood fell to 0-2 Friday night with a 27-20 nonconference loss on the road at Culver Military Academy.
The Panthers gave up an 86-yard kickoff return for a TD to Culver Military on the opening kickoff and that score ended up being the difference in the game.
Freshman running back Tammer Cleveland was a bright spot for NorthWood with 104 yards on 17 carries with a TD. Junior Blake Cleveland added 68 yards on 14 rushes with a TD, and the Panthers also got a rushing TD from Luke Edwards.
The Panthers tallied 22 first downs and 305 yards of total offense.
They open NLC play next week at home against Concord. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
Fairfield 23, Prairie Heights 14
BRUSHY PRAIRIE — Fairfield rallied from a 14-3 early deficit to top its NECC rivals in the conference opener for both schools.
Eldon Burtsfield had a 43-yard field goal to open the scoring for the Falcons (2-0 overall, 1-0 NECC). Heights then scored two straight TDs before Garrett Scott connected with Brett Baumguartner on an 18-yard scoring strike with 1:19 left until intermission.
The Falcons trailed 14-10 at halftime, but scored 14 unanswered points in the second half, getting a 5-yard TD run from Scott and a 37-yard TD pass from Scott to Caleb Noble.
The Falcons had 301 yards in total offense and five rushes for 108 yards from Cameron Kitson.
Fairfield hosts Fremont next Friday night.
East Noble 48, Northridge 7
KENDALLVILLE — The Raiders fell to 0-2 on the young season with a nonconference loss to the Knights.
Northridge stuck with the high-powered Knights (2-0) in the first half, and the score was tied, 7-7 at the first stop. But East Noble scored 41 unanswered points from then on, leading 27-7 at halftime en route to the victory.
Northridge got its TD and a short-lived lead early in the game when Jailyn Rolle hauled in a 9-yard TD pass from Tanner Love.
The Raiders open the 2012 NLC season next Friday night on the road at Wawasee. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
