DUNLAP — Concord expanded a slim four-point halftime lead into a 13-point cushion at the end of the third quarter on the way to a 63-42 win over the LaVille Lancers in a high school girls basketball game Saturday night at Concord.

“In the third period, we finally got into an offense where we made more than one pass,” first-year Concord coach Dan Ross said. “We hit some 3-pointers in the second period, but with the exception of one they were on the first pass. We need to be in an offense where we have multiple passes. We also did a better job in the third rebounding.

“On defense, we switched to a 1-2-2 zone and LaVille had some problems making the adjustment. We also did a better job of finding No. 23 (Lancer senior Amanda Carbiener). She can shoot the ball.”

Carbiener scored nine points on 3-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.

Concord started the third with a 6-0 run as junior Michelle Detwiler and senior Shanice Matthews had baskets and senior Anna Heck a pair of free throws. Following a freebie by LaVille junior Kelsey Gurtner Concord stretched the lead to 38-31 with a 7-0 run. Detwiler had a pair of baskets, Heck one and Matthews a free throw.

‘We are a real work in progress,” Ross said.

“This is a good group of kids that are trying hard to get things. I was proud of the kids. They worked their tails off and they deserve this success.”

Concord was 6-of-18 from 3-point range in the contest. Heck was 3-of-5 as she netted a game-high 17 points.

“We hit some 3s, but if we are going to jack up 18 in a game I would like to see us hitting a better percentage,” Ross said.

“I’m hoping we can be a team that can shoot from outside.”

Detwiller finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for Concord.

“She has really come along,” Ross said. “Ten points and 10 rebounds from her is huge. She is doing so much for us that it is hard for me to take her off the floor, but I have to at times to give her a break.”

Sophomore MacKenzie Rutter chipped in with seven points for the winners, senior Dayana Watson and junior Alexis Williams added six a piece.

Ross used 10 players in the contest and everyone of them scored.

“That was one of the most important things,” the coach said. “Each one of the girls deserves the success they had tonight.”

The coach was also impressed with the physical style he saw from his team in the second half.

“We were more physical and to play some of the teams we have on our schedule we are going to need to play that style,” Ross said.

“Tonight we got into foul trouble (25 team fouls) and we are going to have to find ways of having the physical style without the fouls.”

Concord had 13 steals with Williams having four and Rutter three.

Junior Hannah Herbster tossed in 15 points and Gurtner 10 to lead the Lancers.
