PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Blue Blazers look to continue improving

ELKHART — Levon Johnson returns for his third season as head coach of the Elkhart Central High School football team.

The Blue Blazers rebounded with a 4-6 record a year ago after going 1-9 in 2010.

Central begins the current season by visiting crosstown rival Elkhart Memorial Friday.

Five-eight (179) senior quarterback Nick Faus highlights the returnees.

He passed for 2,130 yards and 15 touchdowns last season.

Three of his favorite wide receivers are back in 5-11 (170) senior Larry Gates, 5-8 (165) senior Spencer Schnell and 6-0 (176) senior Tanner Tully.

Schnell caught 57 passes for 934 yards and eight TDs, Gates 41 for 698 and five and Tully 28 for 577 and four.

Five-eleven (134) junior Blake Faus is another possible receiver.

The leading candidate at running back is 6-1 (215) senior Lavail Robinson.

Returning starters in the offensive line are 6-1 (230) senior Adam Freehafer and 6-1 (230) sophomore Isaac Barrios.

Four starters are back on defense in 6-3 (186) senior Dylan Kruis, 5-11 (163) senior Austin McArt, 5-9 (171) senior linebacker Johnny Tredway and 5-10 (192) junior Eric Landgraf.

Six-three (170) senior Matt Eppers begins his third season as the kicker.
