GOSHEN —
NorthWood’s Panthers remained on a positive roll Wednesday with a 6-1 triumph over the Goshen Redskins at Phend Field.
The Panthers finish Northern Lakes Conference play with an 11-3 record and boosted their overall mark to 19-7.
Junior right hander Tommy Klem of NorthWood fired a four-hitter, striking out three and walking three.
Panther coach Zach Benko said, “This has been a very pleasing season with such a young team. Our goal was to finish near the top of the NLC.”
NorthWood scored three times in the top of the second inning with senior Nate Wagner ripping an RBI double and sophomore Kyle McCoy executing a squeeze bunt. Senior Ryan Gerber singled in the inning and one run scored on a wild pitch.
Sophomore Brock Spitaels walked in the third frame, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by junior Chad Ervin.
NorthWood finished its scoring with two in the fifth. Spitaels walked for the third time, sophomore Blake Cleveland slapped an RBI single and sophomore Hunter Lane a run-scoring double.
“Walks hurt us and we gave them some gifts,” said Redskin coach Hal Farmwald. “You have to make plays to win games in our conference.”
Goshen averted a shutout in the fourth inning when senior Warren Kay singled, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by senior Diego Garcia.
Junior Tyler Slagel followed with a double, but Klem wiggled out of the jam with an inning-ending strikeout. A single in the third by senior Hunter Rivera was Goshen’s only other hit.
“Pitching and defense have been steady for us,” said Benko. “Klem threw a good game and our infielders made some nice plays behind him. The squeeze worked for us again. If you get the bunt down, there’s no way to prevent a run.”
The Panthers travel to Culver Military Academy on Saturday in a tuneup for next week’s Class 3A sectional at Wawasee.
Goshen dropped to 8-18 overall and finishes 4-10 in the NLC. The Redskins honor their seniors today before hosting East Noble at 5 p.m. They entertain South Bend Washington on Saturday and play in a 4A sectional at Memorial next Thursday and Memorial Day.
“Klem was outstanding on the mound for NorthWood,” said Farmwald. “And I thought our pitcher (junior Sylas Buller) deserved better. We made good contact, but hit several balls right at them. If we make key defensive plays, it’s a different game.”
Junior Jake Jesse relieved Buller in the sixth inning and retired the last six Panther batters in order.
