Westview halts Redskins’ two-game win streak on Saturday morning

EMMA — In this new era of less powerful bats, high school baseball teams need to scratch for runs wherever and whenever they can get them.            

And if your opponent wants to help you out with errors, so much the better.            

Westview  took advantage of three Goshen errors in the bottom of the fourth inning to score three runs without the benefit of a base hit en route to 5-1 victory over the Redskins in a nonconference contest Saturday morning.

Warrior junior starter Tarrin Beachy hurled a no hitter, walking three and striking out eight. The run he surrendered was unearned.    

It was Beachy’s first career no-hitter — and it earned him the obligatory Gatorade shower from his teammates.

“All my pitches were working for me today,” Beachy said. He throws a fastball, curveball and cut fastball.

“I had a little trouble throwing my curveball for strikes at first, but I settled down,” Beachy added.  

Westview coach Jason Rahn said Beachy’s bid day was an object lesson in what can happen when a pitcher puts it all together.

“Pound the strike zone, get ahead of hitters,” Rahn said. “Good things happen when you do that.”            

Westview opened the scoring in the home half of the second. With one out, Kohle Christner drew a walk, moved to second on an Austin Schlabach single, and later scored on a fielder’s choice and Redskin error.            

The Redskins manufactured a run of their own in the top of the fourth. Jorge Pizana reached on an error, and moved to second on a passed ball. Warren Kay reached on an error, and Pizana was able to come around and score on the play.            

Westview’s opportunistic fourth inning started with one out. Christner drew a walk, and Schlabach reached on an error. Damon Miller also reached on an error to load the bases. Brant Yoder hit into a fielder’s choice, and Christner’s courtesy runner, Jordan Stoltzfus, was safe at home when the throw got away for another error. Judah Zickafoose walked to force in a run and put the Warriors up 3-1, and Jamar Weaver plated another run with a sacrifice fly.            

Westview (10-6) added on in the bottom of the sixth.

With one out, Yoder singled, and he advanced to third on a Zickafoose two-base error. Weaver picked up his second RBI of the day with another sacrifice fly.

Goshen coach Hal Farmwald said his team was without several key players, who were back in Goshen taking their SAT exams Saturday morning.

“This wasn’t us today,” Farmwald said. “This was one of those games where you get back to school, put it behind you and move on.”

Goshen committed six errors on the day and dropped to 6-15.          

The Redskins picked up their second NLC victory of the season Friday night when they defeated Warsaw, 10-4 on the road. Warren Kay had a grand slam for the Redskins to spark the Goshen offensive attack.

Goshen returns to action on Monday when the Redskins will resume NLC play on the road at Elkhart Memorial.

Westview travels to Angola on Tuesday.
