GOSHEN —
A former Goshen High School football player is moving on to the next level.
Zack Eldridge, who played fullback for the Redskins, recently committed to play next season at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio.
The ‘Berg compete in NCAA Division III in the Ohio Athletic Conference. They went 8-2 in 2011.
Eldridge plans to major in history at Heidelberg, with an eye toward teaching or coaching in the future.
A visit to the Ohio university helped Eldridge make up his mind, he said.
“The football team feels like a family, and that really appealed to me,” Eldridge said. “Once you’re a football player there, you’re a brother for life.”
Eldridge said Heidelberg coaches were looking for a fullback who can catch the football, and that’s exactly what they have in Eldridge.
The next few months will be the closing of one chapter — high school — and the opening of a new one for Eldridge. He is more than ready to embrace the challenge.
Brock Maust, Goshen track and field coach and one of Eldridge’s football coaches since he was a freshman, said the Berg will be getting not just a good player, but a quality young man as well.
“There are a lot of kids who don’t make it to this level,” Maust said. “Zach has worked very hard to make theis day possible.”
Elridge has to report to school Aug. 11.
As far as reporting to fall football camp in shape — he will be on his own. Players are expected to conduct their own offseason workouts.
“I won’t have any problem doing that,” Eldridge said.
Eldridge is the son of Ben and Michelle Eldridge.
For Edlridge’s parents, the chance to have Zach going to college at a school close enough to drive to see games is a plus.
Heidelberg’s black and orange colors will take some getting used to, however, according to Michelle Eldridge.
“They’re too much like Warsaw colors,” Michelle Eldridge said with a laugh.
