GOSHEN —
For weeks the Goshen High School boys basketball team has been looking for the kind of big win that can provide a spark to a squad that has worked hard all season but struggled to find the win column as of late.
The Redskins got just that kind of win last Friday night at home against Plymouth: Goshen topped the Pilgrims in double overtime, 58-55.
Goshen coach Brian Bechtel was happy to see his team’s consistent work ethic pay off.
“Hopefully, we can build off that and get some momentum going,” Bechtel said. “We’ve been playing well this second semester, and it’s nice to see the guys rewarded for that.”
With the 2011-12 season starting to wind down, the Redskins still have goals to work on as they keep their eyes on the main prize: The upcoming sectional tournament.
One of those goals is a winning NLC record, and Goshen currently stands at 7-8 overall (3-3 NLC).
The Redskins can clinch that winning NLC record tonight when they travel to Wawasee. The Warriors (9-7 overall, 0-5 NLC) are currently last in the conference. They average 63.9 ppg and give up 57.4 ppg.
But Bechtel said the Warriors are still one dangerous basketball team.
“They had a good Northridge team on the ropes the other night,” Bechtel said. The Warriors fell on the road at Northridge Saturday night, 64-60.
Key players to watch for on the Wawasee roster include Ryndon Aaron, who had 23 points Saturday night at Northridge; and Jake Clark, who added 16.
Bechtel said the Warriors have become more balanced since losing leading scorer Jacob Thompson for the season with a shoulder injury recently.
“They’ve had some other kids step up,” Bechtel said.
For the Redskins, defensive keys tonight will include keeping the Warriors’ shooters in front of them and contesting shots.
The Redskins have not won an NLC road game since last season, a 48-37 win over Plymouth in Plymouth Feb. 4, 2011.
Tipoff tonight at Wawasee is slated for 7:30 p.m.
