ELKHART —
After a lackluster performance on the road at Westview on Saturday, the Goshen High School baseball team was looking to rebound Monday night on the road at Elkhart Memorial.
Unfortunately, that didn’t happen as the Redskins fell to the Crimson Chargers, 2-1 in a tight NLC contest.
Sylas Buller pitched well enough to win for Goshen but took the hard-luck loss. Buller gave up just one hit through the first five innings and both runs were unearned.
It was another frustrating chapter in the 2012 season for Goshen coach Hal Farmwald and his team.
“When we decide to execute and do the little things, then we’ll win baseball games,” Farmwald said.
In addition to the costly errors in the field, the Redskins failed to lay down bunts in several key situations.
The Redskins got a run the hard way in the top of the second. Travis Pickard was hit by a pitch, and Luke Harris sacrificed him to second. Pickard moved to third on Warren Kay’s groundout and scored on a Diego Garcia single.
Memorial rallied to take the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a couple of Goshen errors. Scottie Clark led off the frame with a single, and was sacrificed to second by Troy Solomon. Nate Troutman drew a walk, and Alex Brewers reached on an error, allowing Clark to score and tie the game. Troutman came home on an errant throw to the plate to put the Crimson Chargers up 2-1.
Memorial coach Scott Rost said the tight game came down to a play or two and here and there – and he was glad to see his team come out on the winning end.
“Parker (starting pitcher Parker Devenney) did a good job of mixing up his pitches,” Rost said.
Devenney said he enjoys pitching in tight games like Monday night’s.
“My curveball was working really well for me tonight, and my teammates made some key plays behind me,” Devenney said
The Redskins (6-16 overall, 2-8 NLC) return to NLC action on Wednesday when they host Plymouth. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. Memorial (7-13, 5-4) hosts Concord on Wednesday.
