COLLEGE CONNECTIONS: Fisher honored by Purdue

GOSHEN — Senior Tiffany Fisher (Westview), an honorable mention All-American and unanimous All-Big Ten selection, was recognized at the Purdue University women’s volleyball postseason banquet.

She ranked 10th nationally in hitting percentage this season (.394) and second on the Boilermaker squad with an average of 2.52 kills per set.

Fisher ranks ninth in career blocks with 322. She averaged 2.25 kills per set for her career, a .322 hitting percentage and .88 blocks per set.

She had 10 or more kills in 38 matches and five or more blocks in 25 during her 115 career matches,

Fisher was the season leader in aces in both 2010 and 2011 to finish with 64 aces in her career. She also had 204 digs.

The education major will graduate in May of 2013.

Men’s Basketball

Senior Justin Yoder (Westview) poured in 25 points as the Cornerstone Golden Eagles defeated Siena Heights 93-70. Yoder was 9-of-16 shooting and 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. He also had two rebounds, four assists and a steal.

Yoder netted 11 points in a 101-80 win over Concordia.

Senior Brent Eaton (Northridge) scored 10 points as the Hillsdale Chargers improved to 15-1 (9-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) with a 60-50 win over Grand Valley State. Eaton was 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Senior Duke Johnson (Jimtown) scored 19 points and junior Elliot Smith (Northridge) nine, leading the Grace College Lancers to an 81-70 Mid-Central Conference win over the Saint Francis Cougars. Johnson was 5-of-7 shooting and 9-of-13 from the free-throw line to go with three rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a steal. Smith was 3-of-6 shooting and 2of-2 from the charity stripe. He also had a rebound and two steals. Grace is 17-2 (7-1 MCC). Junior Ethan Hussey (Goshen) tallied three points, four rebounds and a steal for Saint Francis.

Senior Derrick Troyer (Northridge) tossed in 15 points for the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats in an 83-80 loss to the Bethel College Pilots in Marion. Troyer was 6-of-11 shooting (1-of-2 from 3-point range) and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. He also had three rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block.

Freshman Justin Jantzi (Westview) netted eight points for the Huntington College Foresters in an 83-70 MCC win over Taylor University. Jantzi was 3-of-4 shooting and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Josh Riikonen (Elkhart Central) had two points and three rebounds for Taylor.

Women’s Basketball

Freshman Emylee Smith (Northridge) had two steals and a rebound as the Anderson Ravens edged Rose-Hulman 51-49. The Ravens are 6-8 on the season, 3-4 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Sophomore Lindsey Steffen (NorthWood) posted her eighth double-double of the season with 24 points and 13 rebounds for the Holy Cross Saints in an 82-60 win over Calumet College of St. Joseph.

Ferris State sophomore Sarah DeShone (Jimtown) tossed in a game-high 18 points, leading the Bulldogs to a 78-44 win over NorthWood. DeShone also had three rebounds and five steals.

Women’s Swimming

Ball State sophomore Emily Wisolek (Northridge) was involved in three first-place finishes as the Cardinals improved to 9-0 on the season with a 194 1/2-105 1/2 win over Illinois State. Wisolek won the 100-yard freestyle (1:52.88), 500 free (5:06.79) and anchored the 400 free relay (3:36.34). Sophomore Mia Miller (Goshen) was fifth in the 100 free (54.96) and freshman Kayla Hussey (Goshen) fifth in the 1,000 free (10:51.07).

Franklin College freshman Brenna Ghigliotto (NorthWood) finished second in the 100 breaststroke, third in the 200 breast and sixth in the 500 freestyle as the Grizzlies were third in the team standings in the Colonel Classic at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. In a 139-73 loss to Wilmington College, Ghigliotto finished first in the 200 breast in a school-record time of 2:04.18.

Men’s Swimming

Wabash freshman Aaron Troyer (Northridge) placed second in the individual 100 free (49.03) and was on the third-place 200 medley relay (1:40.18) and 200 free relay (1:31.16) in a 166-33 loss to the University of Indianapolis.

Indoor Track and Field

The Bethel College Pilots competed in a meet at Grand Valley State. Senior Robby Burns (NorthWood) was on the men’s sixth-place 4 x 400-meter relay (3:30.44) and senior Kaila Stevens (Goshen) on the women’s sixth-place 4. 400 relay (4:04.57) and 13th in the 400 (1:00.66).

Volleyball

Judson University freshman libero Molly Studer (Wawasee) had a total of 66 digs this past season for the Eagles (10-25 overall, 4-8 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference). She appeared in 25 matches and also had two kills, two setting assists and 13 aces.
