WATERLOO — The Goshen Redskins through a combination of lack of defensive execution early on and struggles at the free-throw line all night long led to the team’s “Waterloo” Saturday night at DeKalb.

The DeKalb Barons, coached by Goshen High School graduate Jon Everingham, built an early lead and held on at the end for a 51-46 high school boys basketball victory.

Goshen was 14-of-28 from the charity stripe.

“We have got to be more consistent at the line,” Goshen coach Brian Bechtel said. “You can’t go on the road and shoot like we did and expect to beat a good team like DeKalb.

“The Barons were more ready to play than we were tonight and for us it goes back to practice on Wednesday and Thursday. I didn’t like our attitude in practice those nights and tonight we played just like we practiced.”

Everingham  graduated from GHS in 1994. His senior season he was the leading scorer (291 points) for a 14-7 Redskin squad coached by Mike Sorrell.

“Besides my parents and my step-parents, coach Sorrell was one of the biggest influences in my life,” Everingham said. “A lot of what I teach and preach to my kids comes from playing for Sorrell. A lot also comes from other coaches I have worked for and that includes Brian Bechtel. Over the last couple of decades Goshen could not have had a better pair of coaches than Mike and Brian.”

Everingham was a freshmen assistant for several seasons and then the freshmen coach under Bechtel.

DeKalb took it to the Redskins from the very start as the Redskins never held the lead. The Barons were up 11-2 by the 4:00 mark of the opening quarter, forcing Bechtel to use an early time out.

“We were giving up almost two points on every DeKalb possession,” Bechtel said. “We were not defending well and we were not rotating well. DeKalb has  very skilled players.”

Everingham pointed out the reason for his team’s good beginning.

“Everything started on the defensive end,” he said. “We deflected a lot of passes that led to breaks. We are a good transition team, but to do that we have to rebound well or force turnovers.

“Goshen picked up their intensity on defense and forced us into more of a grind it out type of play. We would like to play more of an up tempo game.”

DeKalb took good care of the ball and didn’t have a turnover until about midway through the second period. The Barons finished with 12 compared to 10 for the Redskins.

“Our whole system is built around good defense and taking care of the ball,” Everingham said. “Goshen forced us into some turnovers. I told the guys there are times you just have to tip your cap to the other team.”

The Barons had leads of 17-9 after one period, 26-20 at halftime and 36-31 after three quarters.

“I was pleased with the way our guys battled back after DeKalb took a big lead,” Bechtel said. “The way we battled near the end of the game is the way we have to play for a full 32 minutes. A team has to play with a sense of urgency the whole game and we didn’t tonight.”

The Redskins struggled at the free-throw line throughout the game. Goshen went to the line seven times in the opening half for two freebies and only made both of them once. In the fourth stanza, Goshen had one chance to take the lead and two to tie the score but they couldn’t convert from the stripe.

“That is a mental part of the game we will get better at,” Bechtel said. “Last Saturday night we hit 18-of-23 at the line and won (at Elkhart Central 48-45 in overtime). We didn’t do anything different in practice this week when it came to shooting free throws.”

Goshen had plenty of chances late in the game. Five-nine freshman point guard Brady Bechtel stole the ball at midcourt with around 3:04 left in the game. A basket would have cut the DeKalb lead to 41-40. A Baron defender put some pressure on Bechtel and he missed the layup. Coach Bechtel thought there should have been a foul called on the play and ended up being assessed a technical foul. Six-two senior Austin Macy made both freebies for a 43-38 Baron advantage.

“I reacted on the play because of the type of person I am,” Bechtel said. “It shouldn’t have happened and I want to apologize to the DeKalb fans and the DeKalb administration.”

Five-eleven senior Jesse Good made a free throw at 2:26 and another at 1:59 to make it a three-point game (43-40). Brady Bechtel’s layin in a 1:22 made it a one point contest at 43-42.

“If anything the technical fired our guys up a little,” coach Bechtel said. “We had out chances after that.”

DeKalb was leading 45-44 with :34 left to play and put the game away at the charity stripe by hitting 6-of-6 attempts to close out the game.

Good tossed in 13 points to lead the Redskins, followed by Brady Bechtel with 11, Stegelmann nine and 6-3 junior Deric Haynes seven after coming off the bench.
