CULVER —
The Wawasee Warriors could not stop the dominant passing game of the South Bend St. Joseph Indians, as the Warriors fell to the Indians, 35-7 Friday night in a nonfonference contest.
St. Joseph junior quarterback Matt Monserez completed 12-of-15 passes for 175 yards.
The target Monserez seemed to favor was junior Eric Mossey, with the duo combing for eight of Monserez’s 12 completions and 135 receiving yards.
However, the passing game of the Indians was not the only woe for Wawasee on Friday night.
Warrior senior quarterback D.J. Semon was sacked three times and completed 5-of-8 passes. Semon did have a TD pass, to junior Austin Lutz.
The Warriors just could not move the ball on the Indians’ defense, either with the passing or running game.
The St. Joseph defense also forced a late interception off Warrior sophomore quarterback Gage Reinhard.
Wawasee’s defense had trouble with the Indians’ running game, as sophomore Tajah Smith and junior Ryan Jankowski combined for 105 and 122 yards respectively.
The Warriors had a chance to put seven more points on the board during the 3rd quarter, but the Indians’ defense held strong and stopped Semon just short of the end zone.
The Warriors combined for more than 100 yards rushing, with Semon and senior Derrick Sorensen leading the Warriors.
Wawasee opens NLC play at home next week against Northridge. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
