GOSHEN —
Sam was “The Man” in dramatic fashion Friday night for the Goshen High School boys basketball Redskins.
Sam Stegelmann, 6-4 junior, hit a 3-pointer from the top of the circle with :05 left in the second overtime as the Redskins captured a 58-55 Northern Lakes Conference thriller from the Plymouth Pilgrims.
“I actually felt it was in as soon as it left my hands,” said the modest Stegelmann. “We had a high screen set and (junior) Jesse Good did a great job kicking the ball out to me. We won this game with mojo and it’s great after a couple tough losses.”
Stegelmann scored 19 points for the Redskins, Good 13, senior Louis Kissinger 11, junior Austin Henke eight, senior Josh Gill four and senior Warren Kay three.
“We have been looking for a signature win and hopefully this is something to build on,” said Redskin coach Brian Bechtel. “This was our first Friday home game of the new year and our student section did a great job for us.”
Sparked early by Kissinger, the Redskins got off to a fantastic start. It was 14-8 after one period and 33-20 at halftime.
A second-half Plymouth surge was predictable and the Pilgrims got within 38-37 by the end of the third quarter.
It was 46-46 after regulation and Good scored Goshen’s only points of the first overtime which ended 48-48.
Kissinger hit a ‘3’ from the left corner to put the Skins on top, 52-50, with 2:44 to play.
After Plymouth tied it, Henke bombed in a ‘3’ from the left corner for a 55-52 GHS lead at 1:07. The Pilgrims again tied it and Goshen called time out at 0:13 to set up the final play.
After Stegelmann scored, Henke stole Plymouth’s inbounds pass to tough off a Redskin celebration among players and students.
“Warren Kay played fantastic defense for us and I thought Gill did a good job against their big guy (6-9 sophomore Mack Mercer.
“Kissinger hit a big ‘3’ for us in the second overtime and then Henke, as he has done all year, stepped up and hit another one.
“I thought we actually dictated the physical play of the first half, but Plymouth came out in the third quarter and played great defense.
“We weathered the storm, made some adjustments and we had different guys make clutch plays when it counted.”
Goshen, 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the NLC, visits Wawasee on Thursday night and East Noble on Saturday afternoon (JV at 1) in Kendallville.
The Redskin JV improved to 10-5 by topping the Pilgrims, 31-24.
Deric Haynes tallied 16 points for GHS, Isaac Huerta five, Jack Gingerich, Chase Goodman and Alex Hartsough three each and D.J. Ambrose one.
