ELKHART —
ELKHART – Defense and special teams were outstanding all night. It took until the fourth quarter for Concord’s offense to join the party.
The Minutemen held Elkhart Memorial scoreless through the first three quarters, and the offense posted two fourth-quarter touchdowns to help Concord squeeze past the Crimson Chargers, 20-7.
Elkhart Memorial (1-1, 0-1 NLC) evaded danger time and again. The hosts recovered a Concord fumble in their own end zone, and came up with big defensive plays to thwart Concord drives.
"Memorial’s defense did a great job, too. They had a great game plan," Dawson said. "We had a lot of opportunities and we didn’t convert."
Concord quarterback Anthony Yoder connected with Joe Adams on a 61-yard pass that gave the Minutemen possession on the Memorial 8-yard line, which led to Nick Wysong’s 25-yard field goal.
After a short punt gave Concord possession on the Memorial 32, Yoder scrambled 17 yards for a first down, leading to a Wysong 30-yard field goal and a 6-0 Concord lead.
Still clinging to a 6-0 lead, the Minutemen marched 52 yards in five plays. Yoder’s 31-yard scramble and subsequent late hit penalty gave the Minutemen first down on the Crimson Charger 18. Three plays later, Yoder snuck in from the one, and Wysong’s point after pushed the Minutemen ahead, 13-0.
That lead lasted exactly one play, as Memorial signal caller Dustin Mills found Devante Anderson streaking down the middle of the field for an 80-yard touchdown.
"Our special teams did a great job tonight. We had field position most of the time," Dawson said. "When you look at our first two weeks, our defense has made some big plays."
