BENTON —
At this stage of the Indiana girls high school basketball season, it’s all about getting ready for the sectional tournament.
Fairfield looks to be more than ready. Thursday night, the Falcons wrapped up the 2011-12 regular season at home with a 68-20 win over Elkhart Christian.
It was Senior Night at Fairfield, and the last home game of their careers for Becca Kropf, Kelsie Camacho, Haley Bechtel, Megan Beasley and Emily Beasley.
After sitting out much of the second half — and with the Falcon student section chanting, “We want seniors,” the five Falcon upperclassmen re-entered the game with about four minutes left, played several minutes, and then exited one-by-one to hugs from their coaches and teammates.
Kropf said it meant a lot to her and her fellow seniors.
“We were coming off a loss (54-36 at Northridge Tuesday night), so we wanted to come out and make a statement on our home floor,” Kropf said.
The Falcons (15-5) gave up the opening bucket to the Eagles, then went on a 22-0 run to get out to a commanding 22-2 lead in the closing minute of the opening stanza.
Fairfield led by as many as 34 in the second quarter before taking a 43-9 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
The Falcons outscored the Eagles just 12-9 in the third quarter, but held Elkhart Christian withour a field goal in the fourth.
In her second game back after ACL surgery toward the end of volleyball season, Bechtel had 13 points to lead the Falcons.
Kropf added 12 points and Jenna Kieper added 11.
Elkhart Christian (2-17) was led by Alexis Lyon with six points.
Elkhart Christian takes on Fort Wayne Canterbury Monday night at 7:30 in a Class A Lakewood Park Sectional quarterfinal.
Fairfield will tackle Tippecanoe Valley on Tuesday in a Class 3A Wawasee Sectional quarterfinal.
Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
