COLLEGE ATHLETIC SIGNING: Close to home

Goshen’s Romo to play college soccer at IPFW

GOSHEN — For high school coaches, there are few greater joys than seeing one of their athletes move on to the next level.

Goshen High School girls soccer coach Dan Graber has just that opporunity this season: Senior midfielder/forward Gaby Romo signed a letter of intent on Wednesday to play collegiate soccer at IPFW. She will receive an athletic scholarship.

Romo has been one of the best players ever produced by the Goshen girls soccer program.

She is a four-year varsity letterwinner and three-year captain who was the team MVP in 2011 and 2012.

She was named to the academic all-state team in 2011 and 2012. and named all-NLC in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

Romo is the only player in Goshen girls soccer history to be a three-year captain.

She helped lead the Redskins to a sectional championship in 2011.

Romo said her coaches — especially Graber and assistant Kari Wildman at Goshen and Indiana Invaders club coach Brent Barron — have left her well-prepared for the rigors ahead in college soccer.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without them,” Romo said.

Romo added that she expects the college level to be challenging, both on the field and in the classroom.

“There, every girl knows what she’s doing,” Romo said.

The chance to play college soccer while staying relatively close to home were factors that played into Romo’s decision to attend IPFW. The school seemed like the best fit from both academic and athletic standpoints, Romo said.

Graber said IPFW will be getting not just a special soccer player, but a special young lady in Romo.

“She is a complete soccer player in every way, and a wonderful role model for our Hispanic community,” Graber said.

“Her strongest asset is her strength of character ... She has overcome many obstacles in her life to become one of Goshen’s all-time best players.”

Romo, an international baccalaureate program student with a 4.2 GPA, plans to major in biology at IPFW with an eye toward a pre-physical therapy program.

She is the daughter of Humberto and Maria Romo of Goshen.
