GOSHEN —
It had nothing to do with the environment, but the Middlebury community went “green” last Saturday night.
While it was a “Yellow Out Night” fund-raiser for Northridge Middle School 7th grade Sam Grewe, who is battling cancer, the communities of Middlebury and Syracuse came together in a joint effort to raise money for the Grewe family.
“The last count I heard was over $21,000,” Northridge coach Jason Ridge said. “There was a neat feeling of unity in the gym and there are still lasting effects when I see boys walking around school with shaved heads and girls with yellow feathers in their hair.”
The Concord Minutemen (12-3, 4-2 NLC) travel to Northridge (8-7, 2-4 NLC) tonight for a league contest.
Concord has a balanced scoring attack with 6-6 junior Franko House averaging 13.6 points per game, 6-7 senior Jason Spriggs 13.0, 6-3 senior Seth Huxford 9.7 and 6-2 junior DuWhan Alford 7.0.
“Concord has the kind of size we don’t normally see in a high school team,” Ridge said. “The Minutemen are a tough team matchup with for us a lot of other teams.
“Concord is starting to round back into the kind of team they were about a year ago at this time. They have always been a pretty good team on offense and now things seem to be coming together for them on the defensive side.”
Leading scorers for Northridge are 6-5 sophomore Nate Ritchie 18.5 ppg, 6-0 senior Gavin Blyly 15.7, 5-10 sophomore Sam Ahonen 9.3 and 5-11 junior Joey Ganyard 5.33.
“Northridge is playing well,” Concord coach Steve Austin said. “The Raiders run a Princeton-style offense. They have a lot of guards and a good big man in Ritchie. Northridge is deep at guard and it could be a challenge for us to keep up with them. Hopefully we can use our athletic ability to stay with them.”
The Minutemen have won five in a row since suffering back-to-back losses to South Bend Clay (67-64) and Plymouth (61-51).
“We are playing well right now,” Austin said. “The NorthWood game (59-33 win last Saturday) was a good one for us on defense. We will need another good effort against Northridge. The Raiders use a lot of back-door cuts and have some good 1-on-1 players so we need to help out defensively on the weak side and know where their shooters are.”
Concord will not be the only team Northridge sees this week with size as the Raiders entertain the West Noble Chargers (9-8) Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. JV start.
The Chargers are coming off two of their biggest wins of the season — 41-39 at NorthWood and 45-44 (overtime) at Westview.
“Because of the way the schedule has worked out I’ve seen West Noble in person more than most teams,” Ridge said. “NorthWood and Westview are not easy places to win. I was at both games and am being to think I’m unintentionally becoming a good luck charm for the Chargers. Hopefully we can change that Saturday afternoon.”
Leading scorers for West Noble are 6-2 sophomore Drew Schermerhorn 12.4 ppg, 6-5 junior Nick Noe 11.0, 5-7 junior Nick Thomas 10.8 and 6-4 sophomore Keith Gibson 5.8.
In another NLC contest tonight, the NorthWood Panthers (6-10, 2-4) host league champion Elkhart Memorial (15-1, 6-0).
Top scorers for Memorial are 5-8 senior Todd Johnson 20.0 ppg, 6-2 junior Markese McGuire 15.6, 6-2 senior Urston Smith 14.2 and 6-6 senior Evan Weaver 7.1.
“Memorial has been the benchmark of our area,” NorthWood coach Aaron Wolfe said. “They create stress on your defense with tremendous guard play. We have to be able to limit our turnovers and rebound the ball at a high level.”
The Panthers are led in scoring by 6-4 sophomore Jonathan Wilkinson 12.3 ppg, 6-2 senior Jakyah Qaiyim 11.9, 6-4 sophomore Zach Zurcher 10.3 and 6-3 freshman Braxton Miller 9.8.
Fairfield has important conference games this week as the Falcons (6-10, 4-2 NECC) travel to Fremont (12-4, 6-1) tonight and host Angola (2-13, 1-5) Saturday afternoon with a 2:30 p.m. JV start.
Six-one senior Chandler Kauffman leads the Falcons in scoring at 16.7 ppg. Others are 5-10 sophomore A.J. Mast 9.9, 6-3 junior Alex Miller 6.0 and 5-9 sophomore Austin Christner 5.4.
“Fremont is very athletic and they like to push the ball in transition,” Fairfield coach Troy Beachy said. “Tyler Jenkins is quite a player for them. We will do our best in rotating guys to guard him. He is definitely a hand full and one of the best one on one players we will face all year.
“Angola is a team that is improving with each game they play. They play hard and as a team.”
Also in NECC action, the Westview Warriors (15-2, 7-1 NECC) travel to Prairie Heights (4-14, 3-4) tonight.
The Warriors had their 14-game winning streak snapped in last week’s 45-44 overtime loss to West Noble.
“The guys are anxious to get back out of the floor,” Westview coach Rob Yoder said. “My feeling is there is never a good time for a loss. There are things you can learn from a loss, but there are also things you can learn from a win.”
Leading scorers for Prairie Heights are 6-3 freshman Jacob Heller 14.0 ppg, 6-1 senior Ryan Day 7.8, 5-10 senior Wood Riha 7.3 and 5-9 sophomore Kyler West 6.4.
“Heller hits a high percentage of his shots and he gets to the free-throw line a lot,” Yoder said. “We are going to have to play hard on the defensive end.”
Westview is led in scoring by 5-7 senior Brant Yoder 14.5 ppg, 6-4 junior Kyle Miller 9.3, 6-2 senior Adrian Brandenberger 8.7 and 5-6 sophomore Jordyn Bontrager 6.8.
Yoder sprained an ankle this week in practice but is expected to be ready to go.
The Bethany Christian Bruins (7-8) are at Lakewood Park (9-7) tonight. Marc Davidson is in his first season coaching the Panthers.
“Lakewood Park is an interesting team that reminds me of Elkhart Christian in the fact that they have guards who like to push the ball up the floor and forwards that want to get to the basket,” Bethany coach Jim Buller said.
Bethany has played Elkhart Christian twice this season, winning 39-38 in the championship game of the Bethany holiday tourney before dropping a 49-43 decision at ECA last Friday.
“We are in a stretch of seeing some good teams that are potential sectional opponents,” Buller said. “That means we have to be playing our best basketball and this time of the season is when you want to be doing that.”
Six-four senior David DeLeeuw is averaging 14.7 ppg to lead the Bruins, followed by 6-5 senior Andy Slagel 9.2, 6-0 senior Femi Hollinger-Janzen 8.2 and 6-2 junior Caleb Morris 4.6.
