GOSHEN —
Five championship games were played Thursday night in the annul 3-on-3 basketball tournament at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair, but four more were waiting to get on the courts before severe thunderstorms rolled through the area and halted the event.
The tourney is slated to resume tonight at 7 p.m.
“With the lightening and the courts being wet we felt it best to postpone the rest of the games,” Tournament Director Ed Pippenger said.
Games left to be played tonight at the championship in the age 16-and-over women between Team Thunder-Schrck and Team DeShone, the male age 19-30 finale between Team Spencer and Team Stichter, the male age 20 plus mixed between Team Mishawaka and Team Pearison and then there will be a game between the male 19-30 and the male 20 plus winners. In the male age 16-18 age division, the Flint Tropics defeated Team Farmwald 18-11. Members of the winners team were Austin Henke, Sam Stegelmann and Jesse Good.
All three will be seniors at Goshen High School this fall.
Contest rules all up to four players, but the Flint Tropics played with only three.
“All of us like to play,” Stegelmann said. “None of us like to come out so having only three solved that problem. That was an easy way to solve the problem. We were all exhausted by the end. We are not in basketball shape during the summer.
“We are hoping to have a good senior season at Goshen.”
Winning the title felt good for the players.
“Our team finished second the last two years so it feels really good to win,” Good said. “We have a lot of fun playing in this tournament.”
Flint Tropics is based on the Will Farrell movie “Semi Pro.”
Team Bechtel defeated Team Northridge Raiders 15-12 in the male age 13-15 division championship. Members of Team Bechtel were Brady Bechtel, Cameron Kline, Lincoln McDonald and Lindon McDonald. Bechtel and Kline will be freshmen at Goshen High School while the McDonald brothers will be freshmen at Westview High School.
Brady Bechtel is the son of GHS boys basketball coach Brian Bechtel.
“The four of us have played AAU basketball together for four years,” the younger Bechtel said. “We really enjoy hanging around with each other and playing basketball together.
“We like to play in this tournament. It’s good experience and a lot of fun. We get to play against some of the best players in the surrounding community.
“I’m looking forward to playing for my dad this fall. He has coached me some.”
In the male age 10-12 division Team Hales topped Team Delio Two 13-9 in the finale. Playing for Team Hales were Elijah Hales, Charlie Yoder, Matthew Jones and Josh Chupp.
