COLLEGE CONNECTIONS: Ex-Laker Neff shines for No. 1 Davenport

GOSHEN — Davenport University senior Abby Neff scored eight points, but the NAIA Division II No. 1 ranked Panthers were upset by No. 6 Concordia, 81-78, in a recent women’s basketball contest in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Lakeland High School graduate also grabbed six rebounds, dished out three assists and made two steals.

Davenport is 22-3 overall, 12-1 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.

The loss snapped a 17-game winning streak for the Panthers and was the first regular-season WHAC loss in 35 games for the Panthers.

Neff has a total of 261 points, 124 rebounds, 62 assists and 56 steals so far this season. She scored a career-high 24 points in an 84-43 win at UM-Dearborn on Nov. 30.

Women’s Basketball

Junior Courtney Simpson (NorthWood) netted 14 points for the IU-South Bend Titans in a 77-58 win over St. Francis at the Patrick Sullivan Center in Joliet, Illinois. Simpson made 6-of-8 field goals and 2-of-2 free throws  to go  with  three   rebounds and two steals. Also for the Titans, junior Leah Meyer (Northridge) had eight points (4-of-6 field goals), five rebounds, an assist and a steal and sophomore Lauren Adams (Northridge) a rebound.

Bethel junior Ashlee Ort (Wawasee) totaled four points, two rebounds, an assist and two steals for the Bethel Pilots in a 65-56 Mid-Central Conference home loss to Saint Francis.

Men’s Basketball

Junior David House (Concord) made the most of limited playing time for the Manchester Spartans in a 64-63 home win over Franklin. House tossed in six points and grabbed two rebounds in seven minutes of playing time.

Junior Ethan Hussey (Goshen) netted 24 points and snared five rebounds for the Saint Francis Cougars in a 108-72 Mid-Central Conference win over the Bethel Pilots in Fort Wayne. The Cougars led seven points at halftime and opened the second half with an 18-2 scoring run.

The team’s last two MCC wins were close — 69-66 over Goshen and 76-73 over Taylor in overtime.

“We have the mind set that we’re gonna have to grind out every win,” Hussey said in an interview on the school Web site. “We didn’t expect this, but it feels good, especially when we had everybody contribute the way we did today.”

Senior Derrick Troyer (Northridge) hit 4-of-5 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws for 12 points as the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats posted a 57-48 Mid-Central Conference win over visiting Spring Arbor.

Senior Justin Yoder (Westview) netted 21 points (10-of-12 free throws) as the Cornerstone Golden Eagles dropped a 70-67 at Indiana Institute of Technology.

Senior Brent Eaton (Northridge) totaled eight points and three assists for the Hillsdale Chargers in a 64-40 home win over Lake Erie College.

Junior Elliot Smith (Northridge) had nine points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Grace Lancers in a 90-76 Mid-Central Conference home win over Goshen. Senior Duke Johnson (Jimtown) added seven points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal for the winners.

Huntington freshman Justin Jantzi (Westview) scored two points for the Foresters in a 90-67 win over Mr. Vernon Nazarene.

Women’s Swimming

Freshman Sarah Griffin won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:03.82) for the Indianapolis Greyhounds in a 100-78 win over Lewis University.

The Ball State Cardinals lost to Notre Dame, 143-100, in Muncie. For the Cardinals, sophomore Emily Wisolek (Northridge) was second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.01) and 100 free (53.01), sophomore Mia Miller (Goshen) fourth in the 200 free (1:59.39) and fifth in the 100 free (53.99) and freshman Kayla Hussey (Goshen) third in the 1,000 free (10:44.90) and fifth in the 500 free (5:17.40).

Miller turned in a clocking of 24.35 on the third leg of the second-place 200 free relay (1:38.36).

Men’s Swimming

Freshman Dalton Herendeen (Concord) finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:34.98) as the Indianapolis Greyhounds posted a 109-85 win over Lewis University.

Freshman Aaron Troyer (Northridge) placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.47) and second in the 200 backstroke (1:57.94) for Wabash in a 164-118 win over Illinois Wesleyan.

Freshman Nathaniel Stoller (Northridge) placed fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.05) and fifth in the 200 butterfly (2:02.05) for Grand Valley State in a 112-119 loss at Indianapolis.

Junior Alex Burtch (Concord) placed second in the 200-yard IM (1:51.73) and third in the 200 freestyle (1:39.95) for the Louisville Cardinals in a 188-107 win over Kentucky in the final home meet of the season the Cardinals.

Junior Korey Schrock (Concord) was seventh in three-meter diving (255.90 points).

Men’s Track

Senior Robby Gingerich (Fairfield) anchored the Bethel 4 x 800-meter relay to a third-place finish (8:27.63) in the Taylor University Indoor Meet. Gingerich teamed with sophomore Tim Sipe, junior Kyle Beutler and freshman Christian Clark. Also for the Pilots, sophomore Travis Patterson (Wawasee), junior Calvin Lewis, junior Talal Maree and freshman Mike Childs were third in the 4 x 200 relay (1:35.81); senior Robby Burns, Sipe, Lewis and Maree third in the 4 x 400 relay (3:32.18).

Freshman Tanner Foust (Fairfield) was fourth in high jump (1.85 meters) and fifth in long jump (6.26 meters).

Sophomore Mitch Keyser (Northridge) was 22nd in the 600 meters (1:52.98) and freshman Tyler Wynn (Goshen) 28th in the 1,000 meters (2:32.99) for the Purdue Boilermakers in the Meyo Invitational at the University of Notre Dame.

Women’s Track

Bethel freshman Cinnamon Green (Jimtown) placed second in shot put (12.78 meters) and sophomore Carli Mast (West Noble) fifth in the 800 (2:32.01) in the Taylor University Indoor Meet.
