ELKHART COUNTY 4-H FAIR: Champs crowned

Popular hoop contest culminates on rare Friday

GOSHEN — Four teams became the first squads ever to win championships on Friday night in the annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair.

Four of Thursday night’s championship games were postponed when severe thunderstorms rolled through the area. It’s the firsts time final games have ever been played on Friday according to Tournament Director Ed Pippenger who has been running the event since 1997.

In the female age 16-and-over finale, Team DeShone edged Team Thunder Schrock 18-16. Former Jimtown High School and current Ferris State player Sarah DeShone scored the final two baskets for the winners. Also playing for the winners were Emma Stahl (Jimtown), Courtney Herschberger and Diamond Setterberg (both Fairfield High School).

“Sarah was kind of in charge of putting the team together,” Herschberger said. “I was kind of a last-minute addition.”

DeShone has been on a winning team in the tournament for the last three years.

“It’s good to get back on the court and have some fun with friends and ‘old enemies.’ We played Fairfield in high school and they used to whip us.”

DeShone had other things she wanted to do Friday night.

“We’re missing the Olympics,” she said.

Stahl is currently playing basketball at Indiana Wesleyan and Hershberger volleyball at Taylor University.

Setterberg celebrated her 21st birthday on Friday.

Team Riley Stitcher then defeated Team Spencer, 17-13, in the male age 19-30 championship. Members of the winning team were Riley Stichter, Greg Miller, Justin Jantzi and Michael Paul.

“I’ve known these guys forever,” Stichter said about his teammates. “Getting together with these guys and having some fun is what this is all about.

“I’ve played in this event since the fourth grade and even won a championship back in the day.”

“I’ve been playing in this tourney since way back,” Jantzi said. “It’s a lot of fun and the competition is good. It’s nice to get the chance to play outdoors.”

Stichter played basketball at Wawasee High School and Jantzi at Westview High School. Both are transferring to play this next season at IUSB.

Team Pearison won the male age 20 plus mixed division by forfeit over Team Mishawaka. Members of the winning squad were Brian Pearison, Chris Charles, Anthony Hardin and Anthony Kyle.

Hardin played for the Elkhart Express in the International Basketball League and Kyle has played professionally in China and just recently played on a championship team in the Independent Basketball Association.

“It’s good to get home and back together with my friends,” Kyle said. “God has been leading me to play in all kinds of different tournaments. But it has been years since I’ve played here. I love to come back. The competition is very good.”

The final game of the evening was a championship contest between Stichter and Pearison. Stichter came out on top by a score of 19-16. Hardin made a free throw to give Team Pearison a 16-15 lead only to have Jantzi tie the score with a freebie of his own. Stichter added a toss from the charity stripe to give his team a 17-16 advantage and Paul ended the game with a 3-pointer.

Ben Glynn won the slam-dunk contest as he was the only competitor to sign up.

A total of 13 competitors entered the 3-point shooting contest with Northridge High School senior-to-be Madison Schrock making 13 in the one minute time limit to claim the title. Her twin sister Haley Schrock and Nathan Stutzman shared second at 12. Antonio Dye and Chris Charles were next with 11 apiece.

Madison took all of her attempts from the right wing.

“Either wing is a good shot for me, but I stayed on the right tonight to keep the sun out of my eyes,” she said. “The 3-point shot is probably my favorite.

“It was fun coming out here and beating the guys. They were teasing me a little bit.”
