GOSHEN —
The cross country season is winding down, and the first step to the state tournament series is this weekend when conference meets take place across the area.
The Goshen boys and girls cross country squads will compete at the NLC meet at Ox Box Park, and Redskin coach Mike Wynn is looking forward to seeing his squads compete against their NLC rivals one more time before the upcoming sectional meet.
Wynn has been satisfied with the running of both the boys and girls squads this season: The Redskins have defeated every NLC rival except for Warsaw and Northridge, which are both ranked in state polls.
“We’d like to finish ahead of them at conference,” Wynn said.
The Redskin seniors would especially like to pull off that feat. Senior Jessica Wynn, one of the leaders of the girls’ squad, said the Redskins’ front pack is ready to make its statement on Saturday.
“We’re hoping the NLC meet will give us a good springboard into sectionals,” Jessica Wynn said.
The Redskins have not done as well at the sectional meet as they would have liked in recent years, Jessica Wynn said, and this year’s crop of seniors knows this is their last chance to change that.
“We think we have a good shot at getting out of the sectional this year,” Jessica Wynn said.
This year’s sectional meet, also slated for Ox Bow Park, will be held Thursday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m.
The top five teams advance to the regional meet, which is slated for Saturday, Oct. 13 — also at Ox Bow Park.
Runners want to be running their best times late in the season, and Jessica Wynn did just that the other night as the Redskins won an NLC meet against Concord: She posted a 20:56, her best time so far in 2012.
For the Goshen boys, senior Reid Zimmerman said he and his teammates have had a solid season so far.
“Our top guys have done what was expected of them, and we’ve had some other guys step up,” Zimmerman said.
So far in 2012, Zimmerman’s best time has been a 16:59, which he ran at the Lafayette Harrison Invitational earlier in the season. That’s five seconds off his PR from last season, a 16:54, so Zimmerman said he still has room for improvement.
Zimmerman said the boys’ goal is also to finish ahead of Warsaw and Northridge. But the overriding goal, he added, is to get ready for the upcoming sectional.
“We ultimately want to get to state, and the road to state starts at sectionals,” Zimmerman said.
Running at Ox Bow Park gets under way at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
