Goshen football team will take first road trip

GOSHEN — There will be plenty of firsts Friday night for the 2010 Goshen High School football Redskins.

It will be their first road test of the season as the Skins visit Memorial’s Crimson Chargers on California Road in a battle of two teams sporting 1-1 records.

It will also be Goshen’s first Northern Lakes Conference test of the season. Memorial lost its league debut last week to Concord.

The Redskins for the first time will be facing Kevin Downey as head coach of the Crimson Chargers. The former South Bend St. Joseph’s mentor succeeded long-time Memorial coach Phil Teegarden who retired after the 2009 season.

And, it will be the first game of September for Goshen which defeated Carroll and lost to Mishawaka, two non-conference foes, to kick off the new season.

After Friday’s results, Indiana high school football teams will be one third through their regular seasons — before Labor Day which is Monday.

Redskin coach David Wilson said, "We need to be a better practice team and have that carry over to Friday nights. We are focusing on practicing perfectly to be ready for Friday nights. That’s one thing we can control.

"We played good defense at times against Mishawaka, just not good enough to win. Offensively, we still are not consistent in our physical and mental approach.

"Our defense needs to get off the field quicker and our offense needs to play with a better rhythm. We played fairly well in the second half against Mishawaka and want that to carry over.

"It all starts up front for us on both sides of the ball. What we can accomplish is predicated on what those linemen can do. We simply cannot be content with where we are.

"We also need to stay on the plus side of turnovers. We were in the win over Carroll and weren’t in the loss to Mishawaka. Those are huge momentum swingers.

"Memorial has great team speed, going from a lot of formations on offense. Their vertical passing game is a big threat and their defensive line is one of the better ones we will see.

"Offensively, we need to establish our running game and protect the quarterback. Defensively, we must eliminate Memorial’s big plays."

Goshen returns home on Sept. 10 to host the NorthWood Panthers.

Defensive Report

Senior Dakota Rogers had 8 tackles and 4 assists, junior Brandon Daniels 9 and 2 to lead the Redskin defense in the game against Mishawaka.

Jesse Good had 8 and 2, Chunie Pung 6 and 2, Allen Murray and Brad Taylor both 5 and 2, Aaron Krabill 3 and 1, Brandon Dillenbeck 3 solos, Jordan Falin 2 solos, Lazaro Garcia and Ryan Steele both 1 solo and Joshua Arroyo 1 assist. Taylor had two tackles for loss and Good one.

Offensively, senior Quillan Barrett had one pass reception in the game against Mishawaka. His name was not included in Sunday’s statistical followup of the game.
