The News’ All-Area high school boys basketball first five averaged more than 83 points per game among them.
But each was an overall standout who made their teams, and those players around them, better — thus earning them spots on the elite quintet.
Seniors on the first five are 6-7 Taylor Kolbus of Goshen, 6-4 Seth Kauffman of Bethany Christian, 6-3 Doug Acker of Concord and 6-7 Michael Kibiloski of Elkhart Memorial.
They are joined by 6-4 Wawasee junior Riley Stichter whose team went the farthest at tournament time. The Warriors were regional runners-up in Class 3A.
Kolbus blossomed into one of the better big men in Northern Indiana. He developed some sharp post moves around the basket, a good shooting touch from 15 feet and was a ferocious rebounder.
Kolbus led a young Redskin team which improved over the winter. When Goshen made a sectional run on Concord, Kolbus was joined on the floor by three sophomores and a freshman.
Kauffman wound up the No. 2 career scorer in Bethany history with 1,104 points. He topped the 1,000 mark during a late regular season game at Jimtown.
The Bruins finished 14-8, dropping a sectional final sizzler 52-50 to a strong Fort Wayne Blackhawk team. Kauffman had a single-game high of 34 earlier in the tournament against Keystone.
Acker was “Mr. Clutch” for a Concord team which posted a 17-5 record, dropping a sectional semifinal thriller to a Warsaw team which will be playing for a state championship next Saturday.
His 24 points helped fight off a Goshen upset bid in the sectional’s first round. Acker hit a last-second shot as the Minutemen rallied spectacularly for a 52-51 win at South Bend Riley early in the season.
Kibiloski wrapped up his Memorial career, averaging 14.9 points for a Crimson Charger team which lost several close games and was 15-9. His high game was 30 points against city rival Central in December.
Stichter scored 507 points, averaging 20.3, for a Wawasee team which peaked at the right time to win a Class 3A sectional and defeat Fort Wayne Dwenger in the regional before losing an 88-85 shootout to Fort Wayne Elmhurst.
Stichter set a Wawasee single-game record with 43 points during a victory at Westview and he had 40 in a regular-season finale against Tippecanoe Valley.
Keegan Beer, 5-10 senior for the Warriors, is on the second team and 6-3 freshman sensation Jake Thompson on the third team.
Joining Wawasee as sectional champions were the Fairfield Falcons of Class 2A.
Coach John Wysong’s Falcons finished 15-10 and 6-2 Falcon junior Tanner Foust, a superb all-around athlete, earned a spot on The News’ second team.
Westview, with mostly juniors in its starting lineup, notched another fine season at 15-7. One of those 11th graders, 6-0 sharpshooter Dominique Neely, is on the second team.
The West Noble Chargers were 3A sectional runners-up with 6-2 Cody Hastings, one of seven seniors on the team, earning third-team All-Area recognition.
Jake Sirk, 5-11 Lakeland senior, averaged 18.4 points for the 12-9 Lakers and he did while playing for his father and coach Tim Sirk who resigned following the season due to health reasons.
