ELKHART —
Former NorthWood and current University of Indianapolis golfer Amy Thompson wasn’t completely satisfied with her round of 73 in Tuesday’s second round of the Elkhart County Women’s Golf Tournament at Christiana Creek Country Club.
But the 1-over-par round was more than good enough to win Thompson her third consecutive title in the popular local women’s tournament.
“I didn’t hit all the greens I should have today,” Thompson said.
Still, Thompson was thrilled to gain the three-peat she had been looking for coming into the tournament.
“It’s very exciting,” Thompson said. “It’s a nice accomplishment.”
Thompson will have scant time to enjoy her victory, however: It’s time to get ready to return to school in Indianapolis — and with it, her junior college golf season.
Thompson’s two-day today of 143 was 13 strokes better than second-place finisher Haley King, a former Elkhart Memorial athlete now playing at Colorado State University.
King carded a 77 on Tuesday to go along with her 79 on Monday at Meadow Valley Golf Club in the opening round for a two-day total of 156.
King was playing in the tournament for the first time, and said she hopes to be back next year.
She found it a nice change-of-pace from the college tournaments she competes in during the year.
“Those are always so competitive,” King said.
“Here, I was able to meet some people, and make some new friends. I met some older ladies who were pretty funny.”
Despite the more laid-back approach King took to the Elkhart County Women’s Tournament, however, her competitive side did come out somewhat.
“I do wish I’d played a little better and given Amy some competition,” King said.
King, however, was the low net winner (151).
The two know each other from their high school days.
In the other flights, Chris Dose took the second flight low gross with a 93-92-185; Meg Schwindler was low net winner (158).
Corinne King won low gross in the third flight with an 97-89-186; Kelly King was low net winner with 151.
Laura Asbury took the fourth flight low gross in a three-hole playoff (116-94-210); Jessica Elliott won low net with a 160.
Mike Wilson-Werner won the fifth flight low gross with a 117-109-226; Brenda McBryde was low net winner (155).
McBrydge was low net winner in the senior division after a three-hole playoff (155).
