Falcons ‘rule’ over Eastside Tuesday night

BENTON — The Fairfield Falcons are making a strong case for being one of the better high school girls softball teams in the NECC.

Fairfield demonstrated their prowess with a 10-0 win over the Eastside Blazers Tuesday night at Fairfield.

“This has turned into a pretty good rivalry. Eastside has pretty much dominated us for the first 12 years of our program,” Fairfield coach John Skibbe said. “It’s nice to be on the other side of a score like this for a change.”

“Beating Eastside is great but any win in the NECC is a good one,” Fairfield senior Morgan Miller said.

Miller played a big role in the victory. She was the winning pitcher, striking out eight and walking one in the complete game shutout to improve to 8-2 on the season. At the plate, she ripped run-scoring doubles in the third and fifth innings.

“I mixed my speeds and threw some rise balls to keep Eastside off balance,” Miller said.

Miller fanned an Eastside batter to end the first inning with a Blazer on second base, whiffed another batter with Eastside runners on second and third in the third and struck out another in the sixth with runners on first and second. She also induced an inning ending double play in the second.

“Striking out batters to end innings where Eastside was threatening to score was huge,” she said. “Our defense was really solid. We focus on fielding the ball first and then getting the out.”

The Falcons had only one hit in the first two innings before getting four in the third, four in the fifth and three in the sixth to finish with a total of 13.

“The girls did a nice job of adjusting to the Eastside pitcher,” Skibbe said. “Early in the game we were lunging at the ball and not waiting on it. Miller was a good example of how our hitters made adjustments. Her one double was to right center which was right where the ball was pitched.”

“The Eastside pitcher was a little slower so we needed to make sure we stayed back in our stance and bring our hands through,” Miller said. “My one double (to right center) was the only place to hit the pitch that she threw.”

The Falcons scored three runs in the third. Senior Kami Bender reached on an error, senior Megan Beasley singled and so did junior Kaela Miller to load the bases. Junior Riley Troyer’s sacrifice fly scored Bender and Beasley alertly scampered home when the relay throw eluded the Eastside catcher. Kaela Miller later scored on Morgan Miller’s double.

“Things happen when Beasley gets on base,” Skibbe said. “She has really good wheels and is a smart aggressive base runner.”

Beasley had a good night at the plate with a double, single and an RBI when she drew a bases loaded walk in the fifth.

“It was nice to see Megan hit the ball hard tonight,” Skibbe said.

Fairfield added three more runs in the fifth. Key hits in the frame were a run-scoring single by freshman Danica Mast and Morgan Miller’s second RBI double.

The Falcons ended the game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Kayla Bender had an RBI double, junior Margaret Moore an RBI double and senior Tanya Schrock a run-scoring single.
