GOSHEN —
Call it one more pre-Christmas treat for the Goshen High School wrestling team.
The Redskins breezed to a 63-12 victory at home Thursday night over the Concord Minutemen in a Northern Lakes Conference clash which saw both teams battling sickness.
“Tonight was about survival,” said GHS coach Jim Pickard. “We got through it and actually wrestled fairly well. Our performance was better than I expected and we never look down on a victory.”
Seniors Travis Pickard (145 pounds), Tyler Beasy (220), Hayden Schmucker (285) and Scotty Huff (106) spearheaded this dominating Redskin effort.
Pickard and Schmucker won on first-period pins, Beasy on points and Huff by forfeit.
Pickard recently went over the 100-win mark for his career, becoming the 14th to do so in Redskin history. Andrew Yoder, 156-36 from 1994-98, remains the winningest wrestler ever at GHS.
Beasy attained the most exciting victory of the night, scoring an escape and a takedown in the last 10 seconds of his contest for a 4-1 triumph.
Also winning by pin for Goshen were juniors Dante Wilcher (120), Josh Bustos (126), John Trenshaw (160) and Ramiro Hernandez (182); freshmen Christian Horton (138) and Derek Paz (195).
Junior Evan Smith of Goshen won a 4-2 sizzler at 170 and sophomore Victor Flores won 10-5 at 132.
Winning for the Minutemen, both by pin, were junior Gayfield DeLawrence at 113 and sophomore Leandro Rodriguez at 152.
“Some of our younger wrestlers have made big steps and continue to wrestle well,” said Coach Pickard. “They are very coachable and do the right things.”
The Redskins wrestle next week in the big Mishawaka Invitational, the first of several tournament tests coming up for Pickard’s squad.
“We have only one dual meet to go and a lot of big tournaments. Those big events are all about emotion.”
The Redskins are now 18-3 overall, 4-2 in the NLC.
