Senior Carl Kay scored a goal and assisted on two others as the Goshen Redskins defeated the West Noble Chargers, 3-1, a high school boys soccer sectional semifinal Thursday at GHS.
The Redskins (12-2-3) square off with Bethany Christian (14-2-2) in the finale Saturday at 7 p.m. The Bruins were 1-0 winners over Wawasee in Thursday’s first contest.
“We are in the championship, but these kids don’t make it easy on me,” Goshen coach Viratham Mounsithiraj said. “We don’t capitalize on the chances we have.
“West Noble didn’t give up. We had a lot of shot attempts they just got a foot and knocked the ball out of bounds.”
Goshen had a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.
“Goshen is a better team. We could not stop their passing,” West Noble coach Daniel Flores said. “They took advantage of our mistakes on defense. We made three and Goshen score on each one.
“We are a young team. We only start two seniors. Most of our kids are freshmen and sophomores.”
West Noble finishes 10-6.
Kay scored the first goal of the game at 30:56 of the first half with an assist from junior Eddie Chirino.
It was Kay’s 16th goal of the season for a new GHS record. Michael Beck set the previous mark of 15 in 2003, Mounsithiraj’s first campaign at Goshen.
“We expect this kind of effort from Carl,” Mounsithiraj said. “He is getting better as a player. His passing and decision making are better. He has learned to play more composed.”
Kay also has seven assists.
Chirino netted Goshen’s second goal 18:43 before halftime, assisted by Kay.
West Noble made things interesting as sophomore Diego Murillo scored at 35:54 of the second half, making it a 2-1 contest.
The Redskins added an insurance goal with 12:58 remaining as sophomore Jona Yanez found the net with an assist from Kay.
The Redskins had a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. Senior Naciel Rodriguez made two keeper saves for the winners and junior Jamie Herrera four for West Noble.
Bethany was a 1-0 winner over the Redskins when the two clashed during the regular season on Sept. 15 at GHS. Freshman Andrew Snyder scored on a free kick with 6:40 left to play.
“We have some things to prepare for,” Mounsithiraj said. “Bethany is a more disciplined team. We will not be able to dominate things like we did here.”
