PREP FOOTBALL: ’Busco makes enough plays to bust Falcons

BENTON — Making plays is a part of any high school football game.

Fairfield made some Friday night, but unfortunately for the Falcons, the Churubusco Eagles made a few more and defeated Fairfield, 29-23, in an NECC game that had title implications, especially for the Falcons.

The Falcons needed a win to remain in the hunt for the league championship.

Lakeland and Churubusco are both 7-0 in the conference and will meet next Friday at Churubusco for the championship.

“This is by far the best game we have played this season,” Fairfield coach Bob Miller said. “We had opportunities. We made plays. We just needed to make a few more when it came to crunch time.

‘We keep playing like this and we will do well. Playing your best football at the end of the season is right where you want to be.”

The Falcons took the lead twice in the fourth period only to have the Eagles regain the upper hand.

Fairfield went up 20-15 at 7:55 of the fourth period when senior Eldon Burtsfield blocked a punt and junior Lucas Miller recovered the ball in the end zone. Churubusco came right back and senior Jason Nicodemus scored on a 41-yard run.

The Falcons weren’t done yet as Burtsfield booted a 25-yard field goal with 2:14 to go for a 23-21 Fairfield advantage. Eagle senior Cory Miller returned the ensuing kickoff 82 yards to the F-16 that set up a 5-yard TD by junior Cody Conwell with a mere :06 remaining.

Nicodemus was a thorn in Fairfield’s side all night as he rushed the ball 36 times for 298 yards. The 5-9 (205) back  also scored on a 7-yard run at 7:36 of the third period.

“He is an outstanding back,” Miller said. “He is hard to bring down. You have got to gang tackle him,”

The Eagle defense limited Fairfield to 213 yards of total offense.

Junior Cameron Kitson was the leading rusher with 89 yards on 11 carries. He had a 60-yard scoring run at 8:47 of the opening period.

Senior quarterback Garrett Scott was 7-of-12 passing for 107 yards, including a 36-yard TD to senior Brett Baumgartner at 4:04 of the first period. Baumgartner had two catches for 64 yards, senior Caleb Noble three for 20 and Kitson two for 30.

Fairfield’s defense created one turnover as freshman Mitch Dweitt had an interception.

Burtsfield had a great night. Besides his field goal he booted two PATs and averaged 42.0 yards on three punts. He had a long of 45 and had one downed inside the 20-yard line.

Fairfield (6-2, 6-2 NECC) travels to Culver Military Academy next Friday to close out the regular season.
