Goshen College is looking for a new men’s basketball coach.
Gary Chupp, who had guided the Maple Leafs the past six seasons, resigned his position on Wednesday.
In a statement released by the college, Chupp cited family reasons as the major factor in his decision.
“I would like to thank Goshen College for providing me with the opportunity to lead this basketball program for the last six years,” Chupp said. “While it is difficult to leave a very special group of players and assistant coaches, I feel it is the right time to explore other options.”
Leading a college basketball program comes with major demands and those can keep a coach away from his family for long periods of time, Chupp added.
“Coaching at this level is a demanding job, which takes a tremendous amount of passion and investment and I feel like now is the right time to step away from it. As my children have gotten older, it has become increasingly more difficult to spend so much time away from them during a grueling basketball season.”
Including nine seasons as a head coach at Bethel College (Kans.), Chupp has amassed a 212-229 career record. He led Goshen to its first-ever national ranking in 2011-12 — reaching as high as No. 12 in the NAIA DII polls during that season — while having five straight seasons with at least four victories over national ranked opponents.
Goshen College athletic director Tim Demant said Chupp will be missed.
“It is with sadness today that I accept Gary’s resignation,” Demant said. “We are grateful for the six years that he poured his heart and soul into the men’s basketball program and we wish him well as he transitions to a new phase in his life.”
Chupp leaves with the most wins (89) of any coach in the history of the program. The 13th Maple Leaf head men’s basketball coach, Chupp said he plans to pursue job opportuinities outside basketball.
In his six-year Maple Leaf tenure, Chupp coached seven All-Mid-Central College Conference/ Crossroads League selections, including Errick McCollum, the program’s all-time leading scorer and a four-time NAIA All-American. He also tutored four members of the league’s All-Newcomer Team, three from the All-Defensive team, and five NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
Chupp said he feels like he is leaving the program on a good footing.
“We have a lot of important pieces coming back and with the addition of a couple impact players, I have no doubt Tim will find someone capable of leading Goshen Basketball to the top of the Crossroads League,” Chupp said.
Goshen College sports information director Josh Gleason said a national search will be conducted for a new coach.
