Boys soccer: Goshen rolls to 9-0 triumph over Elkhart Christian

GOSHEN —

It took the Goshen High School boys soccer team a little while to get started but once the Redskins found the net, the floodgates opened.

Goshen netted three first-half goals and added six more in the second to defeat the Elkhart Christian Academy Eagles, 9-0, Tuesday night at GHS.

"I told the guys that was one thing that disappointed me was how long it took us to score the first goal," Goshen coach Viratham Mounsithiraj said. "If we do that against a quality team we could find ourselves down.

"It was good to get a home win. That should give us some confidence going into Thursday night’s game with Plymouth."

Goshen (2-2-1) hosts Plymouth in a Northern Lakes Conference contest.

The Redskins were coming off 2-0 NLC loss Saturday at Northridge.

"The guys were a little anxious after the Northridge game," Mounsithiraj said. "They had something to prove and at times that can be worse. I kept telling them that by trying to score things may not happen, but looking to pass will open things up."

Junior Collin Erickson got the Redskins started with breakaway goals at 26:24 and 21:33 of the opening half. Junior Warren Kay assisted on the second one.

"Our forwards need to learn how to reach each other," Monsithiraj said. "When one moves the other needs to go the opposite way. That will open things up, which is what happened."

Sophomore Hector Torres scored with 4:35 left before intermission for a 3-0 Redskin lead.

Two other Redskins tallied a pari of second-half goals. Junior Jona Yanez scored at 28:30 assisted by senior Drew Frey and at 28:05 assisted by junior Eduardo Vela. Senior Charly Ruvalcaba scored at 18:41 assisted by classmate Gerardo Mejia and at 12:17 unassisted.

Other goals were scored by Mejia at 35:49 assisted by junior Louis Kissinger and Frey at 24:33 assisted by Mejia.

"It’s not like I can tell them to stall," Mounsithiraj said. "You want them to be aggressive so you can’t tell them later in the game not to be. That isn’t fair to the kids, especially the ones who don’t get much playing time in some of our tougher games. If I tell the kids to just stay on our side of the field that makes the other team look just as bad.

"Late in the game the forwards were told not to go forward, but to take the ball sideways or backwards. They were also told if they had already scored not to shoot unless they had given me an assist.

"Elkhart Christian never gave up and that made it easier to tell my kids some of these things."

Goshen had commanding leads in shots on goal (27-5) and corner kicks (9-1). Sophomore Hector Gallegos made five keeper saves for Goshen and junior Jordan Addison 13 for the Eagles.
