NAPPANEE —
When two starters on the Concord offense went down this week with injuries, two backups stepped into the spotlight with big games Friday night at Andrews Field.
Five-eleven (165) senior wide receiver Joe Adams scored three touchdowns and 6-2 (230) sophomore DuWhan Alford one as the Concord Minutemen defeated the NorthWood Panthers, 34-6, in a Northern Lakes Conference game.
“Coach (Brian) Kelly at Notre Dame talks about backups stepping up and that is what we did tonight,” Concord coach Tim Dawson said. “This team has been looking for its identity. The first two games we did not play well in the second half. Tonight after NorthWood drove 80 yards on us to start the second half we shut them down.”
NorthWood coach Scott Hoover said, “We made a lot of stupid mental mistakes. After starting the game by forcing Concord into a three-and-out we made them punt into the wind. We drove the ball and then fumbled it away. Even as bad as we played in the first half we were still in the game.”
NorthWood trailed 20-6 at halftime.
Concord (3-0, 2-0 NLC) hosts Wawasee and NorthWood (1-2, 0-1 NLC) is at Goshen next Friday.
Adams finished the game with nine catches for 123 yards and three scores.
“We have some depth at receiver,” Dawson said. “It was nice to see Joe (Adams) get in there.”
Adams stepped into the spotlight due to a lower back injury to 5-9 (165) senior wideout Logan Draus who missed the contest.
Alford got into the spotlight filling in for 5-9 (170) senior Terry Jones who had rushed for 201 yards in the first two games. Jones was out of action due to a deep thigh bruise suffered last week in the contest at Elkhart Memorial.
“Alford had some big runs at the end of the game,” Dawson said.
Six-foot (170) senior quarterback Anthony Yoder directed the Concord offense. He completed 14 of 20 passes for 220 yards and the three TDs to Adams. Yoder also carried the ball 12 times for 65 yards.
“I felt the biggest difference for us was the way the offensive line protected Yoder,” Dawson said. “He had all kinds of time to throw.”
Hoover said, “It’s kind of pick your poison with Yoder. If you back off to cover the receivers he can run on you and if you come up to stop the run he can throw over you.”
The Panthers had plenty of offense of their own. Six-foot (210) junior Coy Brown rushed for 107 yards on 19 carries and 6-1 (185) junior quarterback Zac Coleman completed 13 of 22 passes for 87 yards.
“We were right in there with Concord except for the mental mistakes we made,” Hoover said.
