Redskins to regroup

Goshen set to host NLC rival Plymouth Friday night

GOSHEN — The Goshen High School boys basketball team has prided itself on defending its home court so far this season: Coming into Tuesday night’s game against Mishawaka, the Redskins had not lost at home in 2011-12.

That distinction is gone now, as the Cavemen left Goshen with a 49-45 win in the nonconference affair. With the loss — Goshen’s second in a row and sixth in its last seven games — the Redskins dropped to 6-8 overall (2-3 NLC).

Despite the loss, Goshen coach Brian Bechtel could not find much to criticize in his team’s play Tuesday night.

“We got good looks, we defended well,” Bechtel said. “We just couldn’t put the ball in the hole.”

But for Bechtel’s team, the season goes on, and the Redskins get another chance to “defend their house” Friday night when NLC play resumes against Plymouth.

The Pilgrims (10-4-overall, 3-1 NLC) are second in the NLC standings behind first-place Elkhart Memorial. Plymouth averages 54.2 ppg on offense and gives up 46.9. The  Pilgrims are coming off a 52-45 win over Mishawaka.

Plymouth is in its first year under coach Ryan Bales, who came over from North Judson this season.

Bechtel said the Pilgrims have a nice combination of an inside game plus perimeter shooting, with three good shooters to complement 6-9 sophomore center Mack Mercer, already has NCAA Division I interest.

With the season entering the home stretch, the focus for the Redskins shifts to preparing for the upcoming sectional tournament.

And Bechtel would like for his team’s diligence, perseverence and consistently good work ethic to be rewarded with a win.

Especially a win at home against a quality conference opponent like Plymouth.

On the injury front, 6-5 junior forward Josh Gill is back to 100 percent, but the Redskins have lost junior 6-0 forward Hans Bontrager-Singer for the year with his second torn ACL.

Bontrager-Singer will have surgery in the near future and hopes to be ready for football this fall.

“I really feel bad for him,” Bechtel said. “He’a a good kid, a hard worker, a program kid. I have full confidence that Hans will rehab hard ... He knows one way to go about things, and that’s 100 percent.”

Tipoff Friday night is slated for  about 7:45 p.m.

Indiana is now the only state in the union that prohibits carry-out alcohol sales on Sunday. What do you think about Indiana’s current law?

It’s time to make the sale of carry-out alcohol legal on Sundays.
The state should continue to prohibit Sunday carry-out alcohol sales.
I really don’t care one way or the other.
