ELKHART —
While Goshen may have lost a football game Friday night, the Redskins did make a few discoveries.
The Redskins, playing their first Northern Lakes Conference game of the season, came out on the short side of a 26-20 tally to the Memorial Crimson Chargers on California Road in Elkhart.
Goshen made a game of it in the second half, led by the running of 5-6 (165) senior Quillon Barrett who carried the ball 11 times for 101 yards.
He scored on a 6-yard run with 8:34 to play, getting the Redskins within six points. But, Memorial played keep away for 16 plays and that left the Redskins with just one desperation play near the end.
GHS coach David Wilson said, “We played terribly again the first half and I will take the blame for that. We are just not a good practice team and that is carrying over to the start of games on Friday.
“We need to evaluate from the top on down why that is happening.
“We came out in the second half, controlled the line of scrimmage and got a bunch of first downs. Putting Barrett at tailback and Michael Lewallen at fullback was a good move by our offensive staff. That got us going. Barrett is remarkable because, even though he is a senior, this is his first year of varsity football.”
The Redskins are now 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the NLC. They host NorthWood next Friday.
Goshen had taken a 7-0 lead at the 5:35 mark of the first period when junior Brandon Daniels blocked a Memorial punt, senior Brad Taylor scooped up the ball and dashed 17 yards to score. Senior Miguel Sandoval kicked the extra point.
Memorial scored the next 19 points before Goshen got on the board again.
The Redskins covered 48 yards in 11 plays with senior quarterback Carson Roberts wedging in from a yard out with 3:03 to go in the half.
Unfortunately, Memorial scored on an interception just before intermission to make it 26-14.
Goshen “won” the second half, 6-0, but it wasn’t quite enough.
