PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Panthers tame Lions at home

NorthWood is one of last area girls teams to open 2012-13 season

NAPPANEE —  After 13 practice sessions, the NorthWood girls basketball team was ready to start mixing it up with someone else.

The Panthers got the chance to do that finally Thursday night,  and the result was a 79-28 blowout win over Bremen in the 2012-13 season opener at the Panther Pit.

NorthWood senior forward Savannah Bley said a pregame conference among the Panthers set the tone for the contest.

“We were tired of banging on each other in practice,” Bley said. “We decided to come out and take it to them.”

The Pnthers (1-0) did just that, sprinting out to a 25-11 first-quarter lead and leading 25-17 at intermission.

The Panthers kept up the defensive pressure in the third quarter, when they outscored Bremen, 19-5 to basically put the game out of reach.

For NorthWood coach Steve Neff, it was the kind of first game that offered both positives and negatives.

“I liked our defensive pressure,” Neff said. “But we need to work on our hustle and our rebounding.”

Morgan Olson led NorthWood with 25 points. Bley  had 16 and Jordyn Frantz added 15.

NorthWood took the J.V. contest, 28-8. Mackenzie Swihart led the J.V. Panthers with seven points.

The Panthers travel to New Prairie on Saturday.
