Goshen’s poor start couldn’t be outdone by a respectable finish as the Redskins battled Plymouth’s Pilgrims on Friday night.
The Redskins had 17 turnovers in the first half, did a little better after intermission but still came out on the short side of a 47-40 Northern Lakes Conference high school boys basketball score.
Taylor Kolbus, 6-7 senior, had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Redskins. Carson Roberts, 6-1 junior, tallied nine points.
Scoring eight apiece were 6-2 sophomore Louis Kissinger and 6-2 sophomore Jake Speicher. Adding two each were 6-1 sophomore Warren Kay and 5-10 junior Ryan Getz.
Goshen, 6-9, visits Wawasee on Thursday night and East Noble next Saturday afternoon with a JV tipoff of 1 p.m.
Despite the shaky start, Goshen trailed the Pilgrims only 6-5 at the first stop. Kolbus had all of the Redskins’ points in the stanza.
Miscues continued for GHS in Period 2 and the Plymouth lead grew to 15-6 just before halftime. Kay popped in a 10-footer to beat the buzzer and Goshen trailed by seven.
The teams swapped buckets much of the third quarter. Two free throws by Kolbus got Goshen within four at 21-17 with 4:28 to go in the frame.
Kolbus picked up his fourth foul with 2:54 to go in the third and did not return to duty until there was 5:48 to go in the game.
Two free tosses by Getz and a layup by Kissinger got the Skins within 29-26 at the 5:07 mark.
They were also within three at 35-32 with 1:37 to go, but could get no closer as Plymouth made just enough free throws and breakaway layups to hold on.
Kolbus fouled out of the game with 1:30 to play.
More on the varsity game will appear in Sunday’s edition of The News.
Junior Varsity
