GHS hosts wrestling regional

The final 30 minutes of a seven-hour program provided the biggest highlights for Goshen High School wrestling fans Saturday.

Junior Brandon Dillenbeck won a regional championship at 189 pounds by pinning Elkhart Memorial senior Carson Sappington on a spectacular move just 16 seconds into the second period.

Then, Redskin senior Jacob Clark repeated as 285-pound champion with a 12-3 decision over Jimtown junior Eric Forrest.

That capped a 112-match individual regional at the GHS gym, efficiently organized as usual by tournament director John Dechant and many helpers.

The top four finishers in each weight class move on to an individual semistate next Saturday at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne.

Dillenbeck improved to 28-3 by defeating Sappington for the second straight week after losing to his rival twice before.

“This feels great, especially after losing to him twice,” said Dillenbeck. “He chose to go on bottom for the second period. I went with a cross-face and cradle to get him on his back.

“Your just work as hard as you can in the wrestling room during the week and hope it carries over into the tournament. Wrestling someone that familiar, it just comes down to who wants it more.”

Clark, believed to be the Redskins’ first back-to-back regional champion since Joe Piwoszkin, boosted his record to 34-6.

“I think I am a better wrestler than last year when I was involved in a lot of overtimes,” said Clark. “This year, I am better on my feet and getting more takedowns.

“I went from defeating Forrest 3-1 last week (sectional) to 12-3 this week. I had a good week of practice, working with (sophomore) Brandon Daniels and some of our coaches.”

Other local champions are Concord senior Steven Ross, 35-1 at 119 pounds; Jimtown freshman Nick Crume, 41-5 at 112; Jimmie junior Collin Crume, 35-5 at 130; and Jimtown senior Jeremy Hill, 44-1 at 135.

Also taking firsts were Prairie Heights junior Danny Hamm, 38-6 at 103; Heights junior Travis Baroquillo, 41-3 at 125; DeKalb senior Travis Gaff, 32-8 at 140; DeKalb senior Tanner Boman, 26-4 at 145; Elkhart Memorial senior Zack Corpe, 29-2 at 152; Central Noble junior Tyler Rimmel, 35-6 at 160; Heights senior Logan Counterman, 35-7 at 171; and Heights junior Taylor Grubb, 41-5 at 215.

Memorial sends eight to semistate, Jimtown seven, Goshen and Prairie Heights both six, West Noble, DeKalb, Fairfield and Northridge four each; Elkhart Central and Concord both three, East Noble two, Angola, NorthWood, Fremont, Central Noble and Lakeland one each.

Prairie Heights had the most regional champs at four, Jimtown had three, Goshen and DeKalb both two, Concord, Memorial and Central Noble one each.

Goshen coach Jim Pickard said, “All our kids wrestled well with both Dillenbeck and Clark doing a great job. We had some good comebacks during the day.

Other Redskins going to Fort Wayne are sophomore Ryan Ntende (33-7), third at 140; senior Andrew Stegelmann (33-8), second at 145; senior J.B. Singer (37-6), second at 171; and sophomore Brandon Daniels (27-11), third at 215.

Finishing third for Fairfield were junior Adam Kolakowski, 32-10 at 160; and junior Alex Hostetler, 35-6 at 171. Fourth were freshman Brett Martz, 32-7 at 112; and junior Jordan Bontrager, 31-11 at 189.

Northridge had a quartet of fourth-place finishers, all seniors — Gary Houser, 22-11 at 119; Jason Watts at 135; Eric Miller, 27-11 at 145; and Rollie White, 19-9 at 215.

Concord junior Chris Hogendobler (20-5) was third at 152 and junior Nestor Ruizvelasco (23-7) fourth at 130.

NorthWood senior Zach Rhymer (25-11) was third at 125; and Lakeland senior Chris Smith (30-4) third at 189.

West Noble had three runnersup — sophomore William Nelson, 34-7 at 103; freshman Jonathon Weimer, 36-7 at 112; and senior Doug Rush, 38-4 at 140. Junior Jacob Rupright (35-9) of the Chargers was fourth at 160.
