BENTON —
Offenses were prolific Friday night in a Northeast Corner Conference high school football shootout at Fairfield.
The homestanding Falcons provided the most fireworks, scoring four touchdowns in the first quarter and rolling to a 48-27 victory over the Fremont Eagles.
Cameron Kitson, 5-8 (166) junior making his first start at tailback, led Fairfield with 224 yards rushing on 23 carries and five pass receptions for 83. He scored three touchdowns.
Garrett Scott, 6-2 (165) senior quarterback, was 10 of 15 passing for 137 yards and he carried the ball 11 times for 93. He scored two touchdowns and passed for one.
The Falcons finished the night with 495 yards total offense and 23 first downs.
Fairfield head coach Bob Miller said, “I’m happy with how we played offensively and on special teams. Kitson is a strong and quick kid who had been playing wide receiver. We had to move him because of some injuries.
“Eldon Burtsfield has strep throat and he did all of our kicking. Scott was our punter and (freshman) Graham Morris did a great job of placing our kickoffs. We didn’t want (junior Nate) Beatty returning any. He’s a great back.”
Just 52 seconds into the game, Scott scored on a 44-yard run and the fireworks show was on.
There were five touchdowns in the last 4:20 of the opening period which ended with the Falcons on top, 27-13.
Scott, Kitson and senior Kyle Ostrander tallied touchdowns for Fairfield in the period while Fremont tallied on runs of 78 yards by Beatty and 65 by senior Ricky Short.
Kitson ran for a Falcon score in the second quarter and sophomore Kegan Showalter caught a touchdown pass from Scott in the third. Kitson finished the scoring with a 23-yard romp in the fourth.
“Our offensive line is starting to gel,” said Miller. “They came up with some good double teams to spring our backs for good yardage. Scott also did a nice job checking off and putting us in better plays.
“Defensively, it was disappointing to give up four plays of 40 yards or better. They are capable of doing that, but we didn’t put pressure on the quarterback and we just got beaten on some plays.”
Beatty had 106 yards rushing and 132 receiving for the Eagles while Short had 102 on the ground.
Fairfield, 3-0, visits West Noble in Ligonier next Friday.
