Newell, Stack are MVPs

MISHAWAKA — Several area athletes competed for Indiana East this week in the annual Sports Fest at Bethel College in Mishawaka.

Natalie Newell of Goshen in softball and Jaime Stack of Fairfield in volleyball were named most valuable athletes in leading Indiana East to championships.

Following is a summary:

Girls Softball

Newell was among standouts as Indiana East defeated Michigan, 3-2, in the championship game.

Kerri Doutlick (Northridge) belted a game-winning, two-run double with two out in the top of the seventh inning. Kaitlyn Troyer (Goshen) and Sammi Steele (Northridge) scored.

Newell struck out 18 in eight innings during two tournament appearances. Pitchers were limited to four innings per outing.

Earlier, Indiana East topped Metro, 6-2, as Newell struck out 10 in four innings pitching. At the plate, she had two hits and drove in two runs.

Alicia Ward (Jimtown) also had two hits for East, Cassi Cook (Goshen) a two-run single and Doutlick an RBI single. Shortstop Troyer and second baseman Carlie Miller (Northridge) were fielding stars.

Scott Hutcherson of Goshen coached the East team.

Volleyball

Stack led Indiana East in the title contest over Michigan 25-23, 25-20, 25-16.

Stack earned most valuable player honors had eight kills and four digs in the finale.

In the first round, Indiana East was a 21-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 winner over Metro at the Weikamp Center.

Melanie Meyer of Concord had 13 kills and Bri Moore of Elkhart Memorial eight for Indiana East, coached by Mark Heeter of NorthWood. Among other standouts were Kaci Heeter of NorthWood and Melanie Troyer of Concord.

Girls Basketball

Indiana East topped Metro, 62-49.

Noelly Scott of Mishawaks scored 27 points for East, Emily Peppers-VanNamee of Northridge and Kayla Stout (Jimtown) both 10 and Jaime Stack of Fairfield seven.

Baseball

Metro was a 10-6 winner over Indiana East at Patterson Field.

Darin Hochstetler (Fairfield) and Zac Mishler (Westview) ripped doubles for Indiana East, coached by Steve Stutsman of Elkhart Central.

Girls Tennis

Indiana East lost to Metro, 5-0, on the Bethel courts. Among those playing for Indiana East were Abbey Neff and Brooke Boyts of Fairfield, Taryn Johnson and Kaci Heeter of NorthWood, Ali Bullock and Alexis Schmidt of Northridge.

Girls Soccer

Indiana East dropped a 2-0 decision to Metro at Bethel.

Boys Soccer

Metro blanked Indiana East, 2-0.

Gerardo Mejia (Goshen) scored one goal and Fillippo DelPrete of South Bend Riley the other with Raphael Borgess having both assists. Cesar Mercado had 11 goalie saves for East.

Boys Basketball

Metro posted a 97-90 victory over Indiana East as T.J. Grant of Riley had 17 points, nine assists, four rebounds and three steals.

Justin Jantzi (Westview) scored 24 points for East, Malcolm Thurmond (Northridge) and Jaron Davis (Memorial) both 13, Tanner Foust (Fairfield) and Michael Paul (NorthWood) both 11, Brae Beadles (Jimtown) seven, Riley Stichter (Wawasee) six and Cameron Williams (NorthWood) five.
