Fairfield scored in myriad ways Friday night to defeat Fremont, 62-7.
The host Falcons scored three times on runs, three times on passes, once on a fumble return, once on a punt return and once on a blocked punt.
Although the game ended up as a rout, the score was tied 7-7 in the first quarter. Falcon coach Bob Miller said his team “woke up” after that.
“A win has to be earned out here,” he said. “No one is going to come out here and roll over for us.”
Things turned around rapidly for the Falcons, as they scored four times in the second quarter and three more times in the third.
The Eagles had five first downs in the first quarter, but didn’t get another one until the fourth quarter against Fairfield’s JV defense.
“Especially in the second half we came out and played well,” Miller said. “Like I said, we woke up.”
After some gaudy offensive numbers in the first two weeks, Fairfield posted a more normal 291 total yards. But that was because much of the time they started deep in Fremont territory.
The Falcons started inside the 50 five times, plus returned a punt, a fumble and a blocked punt all from inside the Fremont 35.
Chase Pinion completed six of eight passes, three of them for touchdowns, for 124 yards.
Brett Vail scored a touchdown on offense and another on defense. Darin Hochstetler had rushing touchdown and a touchdown reception. Tanner Faust scored on a touchdown catch and returned a punt for another.
Alex Hostetler scored on a fumble recovery, and Brandon Bartley had a touchdown reception. Coty Garris capped the night with a touchdown run.
