SOUTH BEND —
With the NLC season in the books, the focus for Concord’s boys basketball team now shifts to remaining sharp for the upcoming sectional tournament.
How’s that going so far? Pretty well.
Tuesday night, the Minutemen improved to 14-3 on the 2011-12 season with a 76-65 win over South Bend Riley on the road.
Concord took control of this one relatively early. Leading 11-9 midway through the opening stanza, the Minutemen closed the quarter with an 11-4 run to take a 22-14 lead at the first stop.
The Minutemen opened the second quarter with an 8-2 lead to push out to a 30-14 advantage, and led 40-27 at intermission.
Riley (6-13) closed to within 10 at 44-34 early in the third quarter, but the Minutemen slammed the door on that budding Wildcat rally with a 15-2 run that helped Concord blitz out to a 59-36 lead. The Minutemen’s height and muscle inside – keyed by senior Jason Spriggs and junior Franko House – proved too much for the Wildcats.
Riley was able to get to within 11 in the closing minutes with primarily Concord reserves on the floor.
Concord coach Steve Austin said his team got a complete team effort on both ends of the floor. “When we shoot like that, and have balanced scoring, we’re a force to be recokoned with,” Austin said.
That balanced Concord scoring included three players in double figures: House led the way with 19 points. Seth Huxford added 15 and Spriggs added 13.
Brock Cosey led the Wildcats with 22 points. Damian Ross added 19.
House said he and his teammates have several things they are working on as the season winds down.
“We need to block out more, and we need to talk more on defense,” House said.
Earlier, Concord was a 50-35 winner in the J.V. game. Filip Serwatka had 26 points to lead the J.V. Minutemen.
Concord is idle until Friday night, when the Minutemen will travel to Jimtown. South Bend Riley hosts Culver Academy, also Friday night.
