SYRACUSE —
When a game is on the line, you need for your seniors to step up and show the way to victory.
Goshen’s boys basketball team got just that kind of effort Thursday night from seniors Warren Kay and Louis Kissinger, who combined for 13 fourth-quarter points to help lead the Redskins to a 51-44 win over Wawasee in an NLC contest.
With the victory, Goshen won its second straight and improved to 8-8 on the 2011-12 season (4-3 NLC). Wawasee dropped to 9-8, 0-6.
Kay came off the bench to score eight points for the Redskins.
Kay said the chance to help his team achieve a team goal — a winning conference season — was key.
“This was we seniors’ last NLC game, and we wanted to get a win,” Kay said.
And the Redskins got that win on the road — their first road NLC win of 2011-12.
Neither team could find the early edge in this one. Wawasee inched out to a 13-7 advantage at the first stop, but Goshen closed to within two with the first four points of the second stanza.
Wawasee ripped off a quick 5-0 spurt to get out to a seven-point advantage at 18-11, but Goshen responded with a 7-0 run to tie the contest - all seven points coming from junior guard Jesse Good.
The Warriors led 24-21 at halftime.
Goshen finally took its first lead of the night at 33-32 on a Good trey at the third-quarter buzzer.
A steal and a Louis Kissinger 3-pointer kept the Redskin momentum going to open the final stanza and Goshen had its biggest lead of the night at 36-32.
Wawasee cut it to two again, but it was Kay with six points in the next two minutes to help the Redskins begin to pull away. Goshen made 7-of-8 free throws in the final 1:25 to help seal the win.
Goshen coach Brian Bechtel said his team matched the Warriors’ physical play and did a good job defending Wawasee’s shooters.
“I liked our toughness tonight,” Bechtel said. “Both teams missed some shots, but this was a good win on the road for us.”
On the night, the Warriors shot just 31.4 percent (16-of-51), and 29.6 percent from behind the arc (8-for-27). Goshen, meanwhile, hit on 19-of-37 (51.4 percent) and connected on 4-of-11 from 3-point range (36.4 percent).
Sam Stegelmann had 18 points to lead all scorers for the Redskins. Jesse Good added 15. Kissinger added seven — all of those in the final eight minutes.
Trent Koble had 13 points to lead the Warriors.
Earlier, Goshen was a 45-28 winner in the J.V. contest. Deric Haynes led the J.V. Redskins with 26 points. Alex Hartsough added eight. Jacob Blackburn paced the J.V. Warriors with seven points.
Goshen returns to action Saturday at East Noble. Wawasee travels to Central Noble. Both games are slated for 2:30 p.m. matinee tipoffs.
