PREP BOYS BASKETBALL PREVIEW: Rested Redskins ready to resume

After week off, Goshen has pair of nonconference games on tap this weekend

GOSHEN — So far, so good for the Goshen High School boys basketball team in 2012-13.

The Redskins have just one game under their belt, a commanding 82-42 win over John Glenn last Saturday night.

But Goshen coach Brian Bechtel saw much to be happy about from his team in that game.

The Redskins (1-0) return to the court tonight as they host Bremen in a nonconference contest scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.

They follow that up with a Saturday night trip to North Side Gym in Elkhart for a nonconference affair against the Elkhart Central Blue Blazers.

As his Redskins prepared for an early afternoon practice earlier this week, Bechtel said he was pleased with his team’s offensive balance against the Falcons.

“We made some good strides in the last two weeks of practice before the opener,” Bechtel said.

Bechtel was especially pleased with the unselfish play  his team showed: The Redskins tallied 20 assists — the most in Bechtel’s 14-year tenure.

Bechtel’s son, Brady, a freshman, has quickly established himself as the Redskins’ starting point guard, and in a change of roles from his middle school days, can focus more on directing the Redsin offense, distributing the ball, and not being depended on to be the team’s go-to scorer, Bechtel said.

“He’s a point guard who can score, but he doesn’t have to do that for us,” Bechtel said.

With Brady Bechtel capably taking over ballhandling duties, last year’s starting point guard, senior Austin Henke, has been freed up to move to a shooting guard position, though the Redskins typically run a three-guard lineup.

But Henke did more than his share of dishing the rock last Saturday night, netting nine assists.

With senior Jesse Good providing another capable shooting guard spot — and senior Cristian Barron backing up Bechtel at the point, along with sophomore Isaac Huerta — the Redskins have excellent depth at the guard position.

At the forwards, senior Sam Stegelmann is, as expected, providing the inside scoring muscle so far: Stegelmann had 20 points against Glenn.

And Austin Woolett, a 6-5 sophomore, made an immediate impact on the boards, netting 14 rebounds and just missing a double-double with eight points.

So Bechtel likes what he sees so far.

But it’s early, and much more work remains to be done, Bechtel said.
