George S. Unger

George S. Unger, 1512-6 Kentfield Way, Goshen, went to be with our Lord Friday at Courtyard Healthcare Center.

He was born Sept. 16, 1925, in Niverville, Manitoba, Canada to Peter N. and Helena (Stoesz) Unger.

Before coming to Goshen College in 1952, he received a Bachelor of Religious Education degree from Mennonite Brethren College, Winnipeg, Manitoba. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Goshen College in 1954 and a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Goshen Biblical Seminary in 1957.

He married Dorothy J. Keller of Eureka, Ill., Sept. 8, 1956.

He and his wife served at Prairie View Hospital, a mental hospital under Mennonite Central Committee Health Services in Newton, Kan., from 1956-59. In the fall of 1963, he entered Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., and received a Master of Social Work degree in 1965. Until his retirement in 1989, he worked as a social worker at Illinois State Hospital in Peoria, Ill., and as a special education social worker in Tazewell County, Ill. He received the Social Worker of the Year Award from both the Illinois Association of School Social Workers and the National Association of Social Workers of the Peoria, Ill., area. In 1989, he and his wife moved to Goshen to retire. He worked part time at Park Pharmacy after moving to Goshen.

Surviving are his wife; son Ben (Debra), Center Valley, Pa.; sisters Kay Martens, Helen (Walter) Ploegman, Elizabeth (George) Dueck, Manitoba, and Mary Peters, Saskatchewan; and brother Cornelius (Martha), Manitoba.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.

He was a member of College Mennonite Church, served in many church-related volunteer activities, taught Sunday school classes and served on committees in churches in Illinois. In retirement, he volunteered at Goshen College, IN-MI Conference and Oaklawn.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Koinonia Room at College Mennonite Church.

Friends and family are invited to meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday at College Mennonite Church to go in procession to Pleasant View Cemetery, Goshen, for burial.

A memorial service will be held at the church Wednesday at 11 a.m. Pastors Klaudia Smucker and Lee Hochstetler of the church will lead the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Mennonite Central Committee, Akron, Pa.

Yoder-Culp Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
