Gilbert R. Jenkins

FORT WAYNE — Gilbert R. Jenkins, 85, Fort Wayne, formerly of Rochester, died at 2:05 a.m. Saturday at Byron Health Center.

He was born Oct. 17, 1924 in Lexington, Ill., the son of Gilbert R. and Glada (Hirst) Jenkins Sr.

He married Jeanette Hylin Jan. 25, 1946, in Wenona, Ill. She preceded him in death on Sept. 6, 1985. He was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Navy.

Mr. Jenkins had owned and operated N.A.P.A. Auto Parts Stores in Akron and Nappanee, as well as Shaffer Oil Company and starting his own restaurant. He was a member of the Mentone Masonic Lodge, Fort Wayne Scottish Rite, Mizpah Shrine, Rochester Moose, Elks and Eagles Lodges, and was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. He enjoyed ice fishing, mushroom hunting, dancing and singing.

Survivors include his children, Rick (Sandy) Jenkins, Nappanee, Jerry (Clara) Jenkins, Tipton, Ed Jenkins, Elkhart, Lynnette (Rick) Van Cleave, Akron, and Brad Jenkins, Fort Wayne; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sisters Ellenore Robinson, Bushnell, Ill., and Milli Janssen, Bloomington; and brother Bill (Alta) Jenkins, Fairbury, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Carolyn Gahagan and brother Don Jenkins.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester, when memorial and Masonic services will be conducted. The Rev. Chris Beall will lead the service.

Burial will be at a later date at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester.
