Bettie Jo Swihart

ELKHART — Bettie Jo Swihart, 77, passed away at Riverside Village on Sunday at 12:20 a.m.  

She was born Dec. 24, 1934 in Middletown, to James E. and Opal (Timbrook) Laurie.

She is survived by her three sons, Mike (Bevan) Swihart, David (Diane) Swihart both of Elkhart and Barney (Mary) Swihart of Philadelphia; and her ex-husband, William B. Swihart.  Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Rory, Craig, Jeff, Timothy, Kira, Brianna and Carissa Swihart along with Kallay (Jeremy) Bonta and a brother-in-law, Joe Barber from Chesterfield.

Bettie Jo was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Billie Lou Barber.

Bettie Jo was a nursing assistant at Elkhart General Hospital for 26 years and was a member of Happy Clowns Club.  Every holiday Bettie Jo would wear a different hat and was called “Hat Lady” at Meijer.  She volunteered at local nursing homes for more than 20 years.

A memorial service is set for 10 a.m. May 12, 2012 at Calvary Baptist Church, 27664 C.R. 24, Elkhart. Associate Pastor Doug Erickson will officiate.  

A private family graveside service will take place  at a later date.  

Elkhart Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements.
