March 25, 1948-July 1, 2012

WAKARUSA — Virgil M. Weldy Jr., 64, went to be with the Lord after a short, unexpected illness at 10:43 a.m. Sunday at Elkhart General Hospital. He was surrounded by his close family at the time of his death.

He was born March 25, 1948 in Elkhart, to Hazel V. (Blocher) and Virgil M. Weldy Sr.

He married Lana (Gardner) Weldy June 4, 1972. They had just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

Surviving are his wife, Lana; daughter, Kristen (David) Speicher, Sheridan; son, Scott (Susannah) Weldy, Wakarusa; grandchildren, Christopher and Claire Weldy and Noah and Lucas Speicher; sisters, Marilyn (J.R.) Rohrer, Goshen, and Shirley (Sam) Marks, Wakarusa.

His parents preceded him in death.

Virgil was a 1966 graduate of Wakarusa High School and 1970 graduate of Bethel College.  In 1971, he started Weldy Insurance and was joined by his son and daughter-in-law who continue to run the business in Wakarusa.  He attended Nappanee Missionary Church, was a member of the Lions Club and associated with the Ribbon of Hope (a cancer support ministry of Elkhart General Hospital) and  was a longtime sponsor of the Wakarusa Little League. Virg enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and especially loved his grandchildren and spent many hours with them at the lake, boating and teaching them how to fish.  He and Lana traveled all over the world together and with close friends.

Friends may call Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the 10 a.m. service Friday at the Nappanee Missionary Church Chapel. The Rev. Dave Engbrecht will officiate.

Burial will be in Olive East Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Ribbon of Hope or Wakarusa Little League.

Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret-Lienhart Funeral Home, Wakarusa, is handling arrangements. Online condolences for the family may be shared at www.rrefh.com.
